Wladimir Klitschko pulls out of Tyson Fury fight

The Heavyweight big fight jinx strikes again. The much anticipated clash between Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs) and Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs) has been postponed indefinitely.

The contest for Klitschko’s WBO, IBF and WBA ‘Super’ heavyweight titles was meant to take place on October 24th in Dusseldorf. The champion from Ukraine has suffered a calf injury, which has ruled him out of the fight. A leading German physician diagnosed a partial musculotendinous tear of the left calf.

It was only this week we saw both men at a press conference, an eventful one with Fury dressed as Batman, and both looked in fine shape.

Fury has had bad luck in the past, when David Haye twice pulled out of fights and Klitschko has pulled out before, as he did against Londoner Dereck Chisora. Tyson’s rematch with Chisora was also postponed due to a hand injury sustained by Chisora.

A statement from the champion read: “Especially after the exciting press conference last Wednesday, I was looking forward to this fight very much. I know that a lot of fans have already organised their trips to support me in Dusseldorf.

“I am so sorry that I am not able to fight on October 24. I also apologise to my opponent, who has spent many weeks preparing for this fight. I will do my very best to recover as fast as possible.”

Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Tyson Fury stated: “It was only the day before that I was face-to-face with him and I knew he was not going to fight. I knew that he would pull out.

“I don’t know what I saw in him, but I saw the same thing in him that I did with David Haye and I knew he was not going to fight.

“Yesterday Peter, my dad and I had a conversation about him pulling out. Peter called me this morning [Friday] and told me he pulled out. It is what it is.”

Tyson feels great empathy with the fans who will lose money due to the postponment of this fight.

“I am not really bothered myself because they are talking about rescheduling it. I feel sorry for the fans. It seems every big fight that I get involved in, all my supporters always lose out.

“It is alright for us, we’re in training camps and get all our expenses back, but what about all the people who were going to travel and have paid their money for tickets.

“I am wounded for all these people.”

Injuries in boxing happen, unfortunately they seem to happen to people who are going to fight Tyson Fury. Hopefully, the champion has a speedy recovery and the fight can be re-scheduled for later in 2015. It is a fight that a lot of boxing fans wanted to see.
