Mashantucket, Connecticut, USA – Newly minted WBC World featherweight Champion Gary Russell Jr. made his first successful defense of the title he snatched from Jhonny Gonzalez by obliterating Patrick Hyland in just two rounds.  The first round was competitive and both Russell and Hyland showed their speed.  But in round two, Russell asserted himself and took over the fight landing devastating hooks and dropping Hyland three times before the fight was halted at 1:33 of the second round.

Russell Jr. was fast, furious, accurate and showed why he is a force to be reckoned with in the featherweight division.  After the fight he mentioned that he would like to avenge his only loss Vasyl Lomachenko and that he would follow him to any weight class to do so.  He is also interested in a unification fight against Leo Santa Cruz or Lee Selby.

Ringnews24’s camera was present at the Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut and captured these images.
