Jez Smith wants to make statement with KO win this Saturday night at York Hall
Unbeaten welterweight Jez Smith (7-0) is looking for an explosive performance on Saturday July 30th at the York Hall in Bethnal Green.
The 22-year-old from Harrow spent a week in Marbella preparing for his next fight at the historic East End venue this Saturday night.
The fight is scheduled for six three-minute rounds but Smith insists it won’t go the full distance, he said, “I don’t want to get the rounds in, I want to be explosive.
“I’m going to be throwing some big punches and this fight should be all over inside three rounds.
“I want to make a statement; last time I didn’t get out of second gear and I want to get rid of people and start moving on.
“I want to get my name out there and get the big fights.”
Unbeaten Smith, who boxed in the European Schoolboy championships as an amateur, will be looking for his eighth straight win as a paid puncher against Bolton’s Chris Jenkinson (9-32-3).
He benefits from expert sparring with the likes of British and Commonwealth welterweight champion Bradley Skeete and English welterweight titleholder Johnny Garton.
He currently trains with Dave Streatfield in Kings Cross and says that for future fights, he plans to prepare in Marbella.
“I just went there for a week this time but when I get title fights, I’d like to go out there for 4-6 weeks, but I’d need sponsors to help fund it,” Smith said. “I was training three times a day over there, running up mountains and doing lots of cardiovascular work. There were no distractions and all I did was train, and that’s what I need to push on.
“I’ve come back feeling fitter and stronger than ever.”
Younger brother to former English champion and WBO European and Inter-Continental super-featherweight titlist Mitchell Smith, Jez is keen to win titles of his own in the paid ranks.
The decorated amateur said of his ambitions, “End of the year or start of next year, I definitely wouldn’t say no to the Southern Area title, but it’s 10-rounds, which makes a difference.
“October 8th in Harrow – that’s another six-rounder; then maybe an eight rounder in December; then perhaps a Southern Area title shot at the start of next year.”
The next fight date in the diary on October 8th will be shared with older brother Mitchell, a former Southern Area champion himself back in 2013, which will provide the ‘Baby Faced Assassin’ with his first fight back since conceding his WBO Inter-Continental super-featherweight title to George Jupp, the man who incidentally tops the bill this weekend at the York Hall.
It will also provide the brothers with their first time appearing together on a professional boxing card, Jez beamed, “We did fight on the same shows as amateurs but never as a pro, so yeah, it’ll be a good night.”
