Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Results – Patrick Day Shines

Super Welterweights Virgilijus “The Terminator” Stapulionis (18-4-1, 13 KOs) and Patrick Day (13-2-1, 6 KOs) treated the fans in attendance at the Uncas Ballroom at Mohegan Sun Casino, to a delightful back and forth 10 round war.

Day got the best of the exchanges and managed to drop and hurt Stapulionis in the third round on way to a wide unanimous decision with scores of 99-90, 97-92, and 98-91.  Day’s boxing skills made a difference in the fight, his jab kept Stapulionis at bay and his right hand reminded him that he possessed enough power to hurt him again.

“The Terminator” tried to apply pressure in the middle rounds but Day was often too quick and found a way to avoid being trapped.  Day acknowledged that Stapulionis was a formidable opponent with lots of experience and this win gives him motivation to pursue bigger challenges in the future. Stapulionis of Lithuania but fighting out of Oxnard, California will have to go back to the drawing board after this loss.

Local fans were treated to the return of Heavyweight Cassius Chaney (8-0, 5 KOs) who was inactive and nursing an injured shoulder.  Under the guidance of new trainer John David Jackson he stopped Carlos Sandoval (10-11-1, 7 KOs) of Agua Prieta, Mexico in the second round.

Undercard Results

Middleweight Madiyar Ashkeyev (7-0, 3 KOs) of Kazakhstan scored a unanimous decision over Marcus Beckford (3-4-3, 1 KO) of Uniondale, New York winning easily with scores of 59-55 for all three judges.

Reinald Graceski (4-0, 2 KOs) scored a quick TKO over Rodrigo Almeida (1-6) after the doctor advised the referee to stop the fight at 1:25 of the first.

Kevin Asmat (1-1, 1 KO) of Union City stopped Ernesto Ornelas (1-1, 1 KO) of Portland, Maine at 1:04 of the second round.

Vaughn Alexander (7-0, 5 KOs) won via unanimous decision win over Antonio Fernandes (7-29-3, 2 KOs) of Brockton, Mass.  All three judges scored the fight 60-54 in favor of Alexander.

Josh Crespo (7-4-3, 3 KOs) of New Haven Connecticut produced the knockout of the night by stopping Jesus Gonzalez (4-13, 3 KOs) of Bethlehem, Penn. in the first round.

Enriko Gogokhia (3-0, 1 KO) defeated Roberto Yong (5-11-2, 4 KOs) of Phoenix, Arizona. via split decision with two judges giving the win to Gogokhia (60-54 and 59-55) and one judge scoring the bout for Yong 59-55.

Kennedy Katende (1-0) made his professional debut with a four-round unanimous decision victory over Tracey Johnson (4-5-4) of Boston, Mass.  All three judges scored the bout 40-35.
