David Tua vs. Monte Barrett II
The Venue: Telstra Clear Events Centre, Manukau City, New Zealand
The first meeting between these two ended in a controversial draw. This time the decision went to the right man: Monte ‘Two Gunz’ Barrett.
The fight was fought for most rounds in the same pattern with Barrett winning the rounds with a peppering jab and the occasional right hand. Tua was sluggish and just wasn’t landing. Tua’s famed Left hook was absent from the early rounds and it was Monte’s left that did damage in the 3rd by cutting the ‘Tuaminator’ over the right eye. Tua said after “I couldn’t get going and tried to get in on later in the fight”. It took until the 10th when he showed more urgency and landed the left hooks and continued, to do so, in the 11th when he had Barrett hurt near the end of the round. Round 12 and it was obvious that Tua needed a Knockout to win the fight and credit to David Tua, he went for it despite feeling tired. A barrage of lefts and rights dropped Barrett, who struggled to beat the count but did and showed his heart in making it to the final bell.
A deserved unanimous 12 round points win for the Queens, New York fighter Barrett but David Tua was once again sluggish and it was a case of too little too late. Judges scores were: 115-112, 115-112, 114-113, all in favour of Barrett. Talk afterwards was of a 3rd fight but in truth this wasn’t a very entertaining fight and the drama was all in the last few rounds. Both have had long hard careers and they deserve to sit back and enjoy retirement.
Tua’s record falls to 52-4-2 with 43 Ko’s while the winner Monte Barrett improves to 35-9-2 with 20 Ko’s.
