Ken Buchanan and Jim Watt together again

aScottish boxing legends Ken Buchanan and Jim Watt made a rare joint public appearance this week

The two former world lightweight champions helping Glasgow promoter Tommy Gilmour to publicise what will be the 300th show to be staged at the renowned St Andrews Sporting Club.

Both men will be guests of honour on 15th March when undefeated Edinburgh fighter Kenny Anderson, the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, takes on Northampton’s Paul David in an eliminator for the British super-midlleweight title at Glasgow’s Radisson Hotel.

The presence of Watt (61) and Buchanan (64) at the press launch was of particular significance as the two had clashed back in 1973 at what was the first ever show to be held at the club with Edinburgh’s Buchanan, who had lost his world title to Panama’s Roberto Duran in controversial circumstances at New York’s Madison Square Garden the previous year, outpointing Glasgow’s Watt in an epic 15 round contest for the British lightweight title.

Both men lavished nostalgic praise on the contribution of the St Andrews Club, stressing its importance to the development of aspiring Scottish boxers throughout its 37 year history, notably Pat Clinton, Paul Weir and Scott Harrison, all of whom had, like Buchanan and Watt, attained world champion status.
