Vijender leads Indian charge in Commonwealth boxing

NEW DELHI: Olympic bronze medallist Vijender Singh will spearhead India’s challenge in the 5th Commonwealth Boxing Championships to be held at the Talkatora Stadium from March 10-18.

The Indian Boxing Federation announced the 10-member men’s team for the mega-event, which includes Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Akhil Kumar in the all new 56 kg category which has been created after scrapping feather weight (57kg).

Akhil defeated Olympian Jitender Kumar and Chote Lal, who is a gold medallist in South Asian Games, in the trails in Patiala.

Amandeep Singh, a South Asian Games gold medallist, beat Asian championship silver medallist Thokchon Nanao Singh twice in the trails in Patiala to earn a place in the squad.

Asian Champion Suranjoy Singh also got a place in the team, which also includes Youth commonwealth gold medallist and Vijender’s cousin Balwinder Beniwal.

Olympian and World Cup bronze medalist Dinesh Kumar has been been included in the squad which also has Asian silver medallist Jai Bhagwan.

Team: Suranjoy Singh (52kg), Akhil Kumar (56kg), Jai Bhagwan (60kg), Balwinder Beniwal (64kg), Dilbagh Singh (69kg), Vijender Singh (75kg), Dinesh Kumar (81kg), Manpreet Singh (91kg), Paramjit Samota (+91kg).

Meanwhile, the Indian boxing federation also announced an eight member team for the China Open AIBA 3 star tournament at Guiyang in China to be held from April 3-11.

Team: Nanao Singh (48kg), Sunil Kumar (51kg), Santhosh Singh (54kg), Jitender Kumar (57kg), Diwakar Prasad (60kg), Manoj Kumar (64kg), JS Patil (69kg), Kuldeep Singh (75kg).
