The Super Six Tournament continues on the night of April 24th when WBC Super Middleweight champion, Carl Froch steps into the ring to face former champion, Mikkel Kessler, in Herning, Denmark.
The much anticipated bout between the two will be shown on the US channel Showtime, beginning at 9pm ET/PT.
Ever since the Super Six Tournament came to fruition there has been tremendous public demand for this fight to take place and, for a lot of fans, it is now a near reality!
Mikkel recently lost to Andre Ward by a technical decision at the end of the 11th round due to cuts suffered by Kessler above his eyes from headbutts, but he didn’t look to be in the fight at all and, honestly, looked like he was past his best.
Froch on the other hand, is coming off a controversial split decision victory over Andre Dirrell, who recently won over Arthur Abraham by a disqualification for being hit while he was on the canvas.
Kessler’s style will definetely be more suited to Froch, and vice versa, but I do feel that Kessler’s disheartening performance in his match with Ward takes away a lot of enthusiasm that I had for this bout.
Froch can probably expect fairly decent British support but it should be Kessler that will receive most of the applause what with the fight taking place in his native country. I feel that this will be the least competitive fight so far to take place in the Super Six but I really hope I am wrong.
Mikkel was a great champion, taking on some great names of the Super Middleweight division and gave Welsh great Joe Calzaghe problems for the first six rounds of their contest back in 2007. But the differences between Kessler’s performance and the position that Carl Froch is in right now should be easy enough to see.
Perhaps Mikkel can shock me, roll back time to put on a world class performance and use his experience to defeat the WBC champion. The PR for this fight will certainly be expressing this point to the viewing public with conviction. If Mikkel were to lose, he would surely need to think about retirement.
He has said himself that the loss to Joe Calzaghe was continuously eating away at him and he had almost a year lay off between 2008 and 2009, with only two fights of his taking place last year, one of which was the loss to Ward. I am not sure if Mikkel is psychologically right at this stage of his career but he will need to be to beat the granite chinned Carl Froch.
I believe that because of Carl’s style, Froch will always have trouble with boxers with that “slick style” such as a Ward or Dirrell so for him to win this tournament he will need to show adaptability which is something he has not shown so far but he has worn his opponents down to such a physical point, using power and will, that they crumble underneath him!
I can only hope we see a great fight on April 24th but I expect Froch to have his way with Kessler around the 5th.
