Bizarre ending to Williams vs Cintron
In a non-title Jnr. Middleweight clash on HBO PPV, Paul Williams (39-1, 27 Ko’s) won a 4th round technical split decision over Puerto Rican Kermit Cintron at the Home Depot Center, Carson, California, United States.
After a fairly tentative opening round which was just edged by Cintron, the 2nd round was still pretty much a stalemate with neither man forcing the fight. Williams just nicked the round on workrate.
The 3rd round again followed the same tentative fashion with Williams just doing enough. The fight had followed a pattern of Cintron looking to counter with big right hands, with Williams looking to land his left. Williams usually high volume punching style was not evident and he missed with alot of jabs, but had the overall higher workrate.
The 4th and subsequently final round opened with Williams being more assertive and the two traded some heavy shots. Then after Williams landed a right hand and ducked under a Cintron hook which helped ‘The Punisher’ to stumble to the ground, at the same time Cintron’s momentum carried him straight through the ropes landing on his head and neck on a table outside the ring.
Cinton (32-3-1, 28 Ko’s) lay motionless but conscious for a few minutes while a doctor attended to him and it was the doctor who decided that Cintron should be taken to an ambulance on a stretcher, as a precautionary measure rather than fight on.
A rematch would be the sensible option and the fight, while slow to get going, did look like it had ignited before the bizarre incident ended the contest.
