Dvd: The Joe Louis Story

Joe Louis, the “Brown Bomber”  was the heavyweight boxing champion for an incredible twelve years, from 1937 to 1949. He earned respect from his fellow boxers and the public alike with his honest, hardworking approach to the sport that he loved and in which excelled.

But his story was so much  about the man behind the punch, as it was about what happened in the ring and after the bell sounded. His future would have been impossible to predict from the background of his humble childhood growing up in rural Alabama, but his path in life was clear when he took up boxing, racking up an impressive 50 win by the end of his amateur career.

The combination of action footage and real-life boxer Coley Wallace’s portrayal of Louis brings true authenticity of his biopic of one of the first true greats of boxing in the 20th century.

THE JOE LOUIS STORY achieved notoriety upon its original release, by being banned in parts of the American south, there were objections to Louis being treated on an equal footing with the white characters in the film, a fact that is hard to believe today and gives a small, but significant insight into life in the south many years ago.
