Veteran named as Kessler’s replacement in round-robin

Former light-heavyweight champion Glen Johnson has been called in to complete the Super Six World Boxing Classic line-up.

The 41-year-old will meet Allan Green in the third round of the round-robin series on November 6 after Mikkel Kessler was forced to withdraw with an eye injury.

Green was himself a late addition to the event, replacing Jermain Taylor after he had been knocked out by Arthur Abraham.

However, Green was overmatched in his first fight against WBA champion Andre Ward, and whoever wins would need help from others to qualify for the semi-finals.

“I want to thank (promoters) Showtime for including me in their Super Six tournament,” Johnson said in a statement. “Having dedicated so many years to the sport of boxing, it is gratifying to still be considered worthy of competing with some of the top fighters in the world.”

Johnson may have 14 losses on his resume but he has consistently fought the best in the business, peaking in 2004 with successive victories over Clinton Woods, Roy Jones and Antonio Tarver.

The veteran fought for the IBF light-heavyweight title only last month, losing narrowly to the unbeaten Tavoris Cloud.

Despite having fought at the higher division for the last decade, Johnson is confident of making the 168lb limit.

The group phase of the Super Six will be completed on November 27 Andre Ward facing Andre Dirrell
