As chief support to the Juan Manuel Lopez vs Rafael Marquez bout at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Glen Johnson knocked out Allan Green in the 8th round in what was a semi finals match in the Super Six tournament.
From the outset Johnson stalked Green around the ring, landing huge punches, while Green, himself, tried to control Johnson with his jab with no effect.
It was clear that Green wanted to control the fight from the outside but Johnson wasn’t going to allow him that as he continually got inside.
Near the end of the 3rd round, Johnson landed bombs on Green in the corner and when the bell rang it seemed Green’s legs betrayed him as he looked unsteady.
Green’s body language became more negative in the 4th when referee, Robert Byrd, warned him for excessive holding.
In the 6th, Green was rocked by a huge right hand and it seemed difficult to realise how he could turn things around at this point.
The end came in the 8th when Johnson hit Green with a punch that, admittedly, seemed to land on the back of Green’s head but Johnson followed up immediately with another right, a punch that was legal, and Green hit the deck on his front.
Green complained to the referee while he was attempting to rise, but Byrd ignored his pleas and counted to ten before counting him out.
The knockout punch still affected Green as he was unsteady when he rose and Johnson immediately came over to help his friend regain his balance.
With his knockout win, Johnson scores three points in the tournament, drawing with Abraham, an impressive start, while Green, never having impressed ever since entering, now exits.
