Sports Minister holds back no punches against SA Boxing

Good corporate governance is non negotiable. That’s the newly appointed sports minister Fikile Mbalula’s message to the dysfunctional Board of Boxing South Africa (BSA). BSA has been embroiled in a number of controversies over the past few years, and that is set to change.

Boxing South Africa has been in crisis after being characterised by a lot of infighting, personality clashes and financially it’s bankrupt. It owes the Receiver of Revenue R 5million. Minister Mbalula has already started ruffling a few feathers.

Minister Mbalula says: ” Time for endless meetings and a lot of pep talk has gone past.” The Minister has ordered BSA to appoint a new chief executive officer and a chief financial officer by next month. BSA chairperson DR Peter Ngatane says: ” Having had two fruitful meetings within a short space of time is unheard of in this country. The Sports Minister is proactive and they pledge not to disappoint him. BSA is encouraged because the current boxing act is under review”.

To ensure good corporate governance, the Department of Sport and Recreation’s professor Paul Sign has been appointed to the Board of BSA. Prof. Sign says that his primary role within BSA will be to oversee its functions, advice, and make sure that they comply to strict corporate governance, and to help BSA comply with tax issues. Minister Mbalula has demanded change before the term of the current Board expires in May next year.
