Burns looks to Fana after victory

Ricky Burns successfully defended his WBO super featherweight title for the second time against Joseph Laryea and moved a step closer to a unification bout with the IBF champion Mzonke Fana last night.

Joseph Laryea retired in his corner after the seventh round on Saturday. The Ghanaian challenger claimed a serious injury to his right hand forced his retirement. Burns appeared to be well ahead on points when Laryea retired with his corner claiming he had broken a knuckle in his right hand.

From the start it was clear that the Burns weaponry worked better against Laryea than fellow Scotsman Appleby’s had last December. Ricky immediately made an impression with his jab and there was also a noticeable speed advantage which would prove decisive. Laryea couldn’t handle burns boxing style and many times after a Burns flurry he would look to his corner, It seemed he was looking for a way out before retiring at the end of the seventh.

There was good news at the end of the Burns fight as he added “Fana’s camp have been saying that all Frank Warren has to do is get in touch, so fingers crossed he can pull it off”.

“I’m sure he would love to unify the titles — and so would I.”

If the fight with Fana comes off, Burns would love it to be at Airdrie’s Excelsior Stadium which holds 14,000.

The Coatbridge fighter now improves his record to  31-2 (8 KO’s) while Joseph Laryea falls to 14-5 (11 KO’s).
