On Friday April 22nd, boxing once again takes center stage at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. When junior welterweight contender Breidis Prescott takes on Bayan Jargal in the ten round main event on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. On the undercard, Providence prospect and former Olympian Demetrius Andrade faces off against Omar Bell on a fight card packed and ready to deliver Northeast fans with another dosage of the sweet science.
Breidis Prescott (23-2-0, 19 KOs), whose primary claim to fame is a one sided demolition of British sensation Amir Khan inside one minute of the first round, has yet to defeat follow up his “Khanquering” performance with a win against top opposition. Prescott followed his knockout of Khan with a pair of losses to Miguel Vazquez and former WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight Champion Kevin Mitchell. Repeated efforts to sign off on a rematch with Khan failed, resulting in the power punching Prescott becoming the tough but largely untested prospect nobody wants to fight. Knocking out seventeen of his first eighteen opponents en route to being ranked #11 in the world by the WBA, Prescott will merely look to stay active against Mongolian journeyman Bayan Jargal, in hopes that following a win, he will receive a title shot in the near future.
Jargal (15-1-3, 10 KOs), fighting out of Arlington, Virginia, by way of Ulan-Bator, Mongolia, will step into the ring for the second time in a row against a prospect in the junior welterweight division. In November of 2010, Jargal lost a razor thin split decision to Philadelphia based southpaw Steve Chambers, a decision many ringside observers believe should have been awarded to Jargal. Despite his record filled with wins over several bottom dwellers in the welterweight and junior welterweight divisions, the 29 year old is accustomed to fighting world class opposition. In 2004, he represented his nation in the World Games. While Jargal is the heavy underdog entering his bout with Prescott, Star Boxing CEO Joe DeGuardia anticipates the bout will be a fan friendly fight from start to finish. “At Star Boxing we always look to make the best possible fights for the fans, and we feel April 22nd will be no different. You have one of the hottest prospects in all of boxing opening up the show, and Jargal and Prescott are both all-action fighters which is sure to produce fireworks.”
In the co-feature, 2008 Olympian Demetrius Andrade (12-0-0, 8 KOs) from Providence, Rhode Island, will match up against Omar Bell (8-1-0, 5 KOs), a club fighter from Georgia with over one year of inactivity. Andrade, frequently criticized in boxing circles for his inexperienced and unrefined opposition, will continue his slow but methodical rise up the light middleweight ladder. Fighting for the seventh time in just thirteen career fights on ESPN, “Boo Boo” is creating plenty of buzz in the Northeast, where he has built up an impressive and growing fan base. The slick southpaw will fight Bell in a bout scheduled for eight rounds.
In what promises to be an entertaining and intriguing showcase of young boxing prospects, Breidis Prescott and Demetrius Andrade will aim to prove to a national audience that they have what it takes to be the next shining star of the sweet science, while Bayan Jargal and Omar Bell stand in their way and look to make a name for themselves.
