Floyd Mayweather Jnr. returns to what he does best
This week it has was announced that former multi-weight ‘World’ Champion Floyd Mayweather Jnr. will return to the ring, in the Welterweight division, against current WBC Welterweight Champion,’ Vicious’ Victor Ortiz.
Mayweather last fought in May 2010 against ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley, winning an impressive 12 round unanimous decision in Las Vegas. He’s been kept away from the ring due to legal reasons and it is great to see him back, doing what he does best: Boxing.
Victor Ortiz ‘stock’ as a fighter has gone up due to a superb victory over then WBC champion Andre Berto. Ortiz won a thrilling 12 round points decision, over the then unbeaten Haitian fighter to capture the title. His reward it seems, is a huge money making fight with one of the best fighters in the sport today.
The date for Floyd’s return is September 17th 2011, though at the moment no venue has officially been announced. It does seem likely that the fight will take place in Las Vegas, Nevada and shown on HBO.
While, fans still crave the long overdue meeting between Mayweather and fellow Welterweight Manny Pacquiao. It now seems like this bout won’t get made until at least early 2012. WBO Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao has a ‘rubber’ match against Mexican, Juan Manuel Marquez on the 12th November 2011, at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas in defence of his WBO belt.
To me, it is Great to see Mayweather back doing what he does best and the choice of opponent is a good one. Ortiz is fresh, quick and powerful, with plenty of charisma. Ortiz current record is 29-2-2 (22 Ko’s) compared to Floyd Mayweathers unbeaten record of 41-0 (25 Ko’s).
Let’s all hope that this fight is the one that leads to, the long awaited fight with, Manny Pacquiao though Victor Ortiz will certainly be attempting to get in the way of that fight happening.
