Murray vs Mitchell: ‘North n South’ preview

mit

Kevin Mitchell returns to the ring on July 9th to face European lightweight champion, John Murray at the Excel Arena in London in what should be an exciting domestic bout.

The former undefeated WBO inter-continental champion hasn’t fought since May, 2010 when he was knocked out inside three rounds by Australian fearsome puncher, Michael Katsidis. Mitchell had been plagued with personal problems before and after that bout, stating that it affected his training,  but has claimed that his life is finally in order despite reports that laid claim to him being arrested on suspicion of drug possession and owning a drug farm in April.

Manchester’s John Murray won the British lightweight title in 2008 when he beat Lee Meager in 5 rounds, only to lose it on the scales two fights later when he came in almost 2 ounces over the legal lightweight limit of 135lb in what was supposed to be the third defense against Scott Lawton. Nevertheless, Murray made his point that he should still be the rightful champion when he won in six, putting pressure on Meager all the way through and knocking him down in the first round. Murray wanted his British title back and fought domestic level veteran, Jon Thaxton in October, 2010, getting a stoppage in four rounds and his beloved British crown back. A European title shot was the reward for his victory over Thaxton, and Murray proved his worth when he grabbed that, too, beating Gary Buckland in the 11th round. Since then, Murray has made two defenses, his last being in April, winning on points over Karim El Ouazghari.

Promoter, Frank Warren was looking to finalise a Murray vs Mitchell bout back in February but called it off due to claims that Mitchell demanded more money for the fight. Mitchell, himself, wrote on his Facebook page that the reason behind the cancellation were due to “politics.” However, the fight was confirmed in April to finally be taking place.

Although the event is titled ‘North n South’, it makes one hesitant to call this a grudge match as Mitchell and Murray have a mutual respect for one another, but at the same time they both know each other’s own strengths and weaknesses, and there is no doubt that each fighter is focusing on both.

Although not a knockout artist, Murray’s heart and determination cannot be questioned as he has used both attributes to grind out some very tough wins. He has a warrior’s heart through and through! Throw in the factor that he always holds up a tight guard, and it becomes blatantly obvious that he will give Mitchell everything he will be able to handle!
Murray’s heart and determination are two main reasons why many fans have thought that this bout may have come a little too soon for Mitchell, but he does possess genuine knockout  power, superior speed and is not afraid to go toe to toe, which is something he and Murray have in common.

Stylistically, it should turn out to be a fantastic domestic dust up! Both are good technical operators of the ring, and it is a fight that is hard to call a winner.

Will Mitchell’s superior speed and habit of starting faster be Murray’s down fall? Or will Murray’s warrior mentality see him pull out another thrilling victory to keep his unbeaten record?
