Kevin Mitchell, John Murray, Ricky Burns and Nicky Cook all made weight for their mega domestic showdowns at the Echo Arena on Saturday night in Liverpool.
Mitchell weighed 9 stone, 8lb and 8 ounces, while Murray hit 9 stone, 8lb. It will be the first time in thirteen months since Mitchell has fought and has received criticism about jumping straight into fighting somebody of John Murray’s calibre. Nevertheless, if he is on form then both could potentially produce fireworks for the home viewing audience and the attending crowd.
Nicky Cook needed two trips to the scales and made it on the 9 stone and 4lb limit in his second attempt. Cook challenges Ricky Burns for his WBO super-featherweight title. Cook, from Dagenham as is Kevin Mitchell, has also received criticism from fight fans stating that he does not deserve the shot based on his two years being out of the ring. He did have one six round fight at the 02 arena on the undercard of Groves vs DeGale in May, but whether that will be enough preparation for Burns is anybody’s guess apart from Cook, perhaps.
Tony Bellew weighed 12 stone, 7lb for his vacant British and Commonwealth title challenge against Ovill McKenzie. McKenzie weighed 12st, 6lb.
Prospect, Frankie Gavin also fights Curtis Woodhall on the bill in what has been built up to be a personal grudge match between the two. Gavin weighed 10 stone, 7lb while Woodhouse was 10 stone, 5lb.
