Undefeated Chris ‘Stainless’ Steel aims to end 2011 on a high

You missed your last fight throw injury, can you tell us a bit about your injury?

I picked up the injury in sparring I landed a punch to the temple and the hand went. It was swollen up to twice its size so I went down to the hospital because I thought I had broken it and they x-rayed it. They told me it wasn’t broken and that the tendons were inflammed so all you could do is ice it. I done that for a month and it never improved so I had to pull out of a bout in November. When I got offered this fight I went down to the physio and he started working on it, turns out I had a trapped nerve in my hand, some tendon damage which the hospital didn’t diagnose and it was still swollen up so hes working on it every few days and using kinesio tape to get me ready for the fight.

How has your hand been holding up in training?

I have been doing alot of running and shadowboxing and other training and using the hand lightly on pads and stuff. Since the physio started working on it i’m not getting the pain I was before so i’m hoping in a few days with more treatment from the physio I will be back to 100% and training the way I normally would. I dont want to say to much about it just incase my opponent reads this but im confident by fight night I will be ready.T

This will be your 4th fight and you will be fighting Daniel Micallef at Cleland Miners, how much do you know about your opponent?

Well I actually sparred with my opponent once before when he first came over from Malta, was only a couple of rounds but I got a rough idea of what hes all about. He’s a small aggressive fighter who throws a lot of punches, and from what I can remember he is strong. Hes the type of fighter thats made for my style. These are the type of guys I like to fight, the aggressive wild ones. But it’s been a year or two since I sparred with him and since then hes turned professional and had six fights, the guy has had the same amount of wins as me so i’ll definetly need to turn up on the night to beat him.

It’s almost the end of the year now, how do you feel you career has went in 2011 and what can we see in 2012 from Chris Steel?

Well after I fight next Friday I will have had 3 fights in 2011, it isn’t alot of fights but i’ve had a bit of bad luck with one show being cancelled and then getting injured. I worked two jobs for this full year while training and fighting aswell so its been hard. The main thing is that i’ve won every fight so far and i’m constantly learning in these fights. My promoters done a fantastic job in putting me in fights that will test me and fights I will learn from. I want to win my fight next Friday and put on a good performance and end the year at 4-0. I don’t work anymore I quit my job so I could train full time so next year expect me to step it up another level with more fights and better performances, get that experience under my belt then I want to really challenge for titles. I know I have the potential to do it, so does my coaching and managment team, so it’s just down to how hard work to see how far I can go in boxing.

A message for the fans?

Id just like to say I appreciate all of the support and positivity people have shown towards me. Locally their is alot of people who have been coming to my fights from the start and more and more are coming everytime so just to have that support in my hometown is amazing. The support on the internet through the websites with people watching my fights on youtube and discussing on the sites and forums. I know I have a following on the ESB website and these guys follow my career and really wish me well. Just gives you that extra piece of motivation when it comes to training and fighting when you dont want to let people down.

Thanks for your time
Chris “Stainless” Steel
