John Murray biggest career fight to date takes place tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden, New York, United States. He will face Brandon Rios (31-1) for the WBA World lightweight title on the under card of Miguel Cotto v Antonio Margarito.
Speaking ahead of Murray’s World title fight trainer Joe Gallagher shared some thoughts with www.britishboxers.co.uk
“I think Rios is taking John Murray lightly, I’m sure he has when theres talks of fighting Gamboa in January, but at the same token I’m sure hes highly confident”
This will be Murray’s first fight back after his loss to Kevin Mitchell in July when he lost his unbeaten record to the Londoner in a thriller.
“They’ve looked at DVD of Murray against Mitchell and thought 3-4 rounds we’ll walk through Murray”
“Rios can be hit and boxing is about being hit”
“This fight could easily be as good as the top of the bill, Cotto v Margarito”
“Murray has just been involved in fight of the year domestically, who says he wont be awarded the fight of the year on the world stage”
Murray has already held the British and European titles, now he enters the world Stage to try bring back a world title to UK, if he does so, he will become Joe Gallaghers’ first World champion.
Speaking about the lack of press coverage Joe added “He has the perfect collection, now hes fighting for the genuine world title what what more does the kid have to do?”
“John Murrays’ mum and dad are proud of there son, and for them to think that there son doesn’t warrant being mentioned or talked to in the national papers or TV programs it is upsetting”
“For me to win a world title with John Murray, to do it with a fighter from from scratch would be something else”
“I’ve been joking around in the gym and saying I feel like Kevin Keegan, I knew how Keegan felt when Newcastle lost it that day when he said I’d just love it, I’d just love it, I’d just love it ill tell you what I’d just love it if we went there and got the result what would they say then?”
“That’s how I feel at the moment”
“I think there being unfair on John Murray and I know Johns hurting”
“At the end of the day anything can happen in boxing, that’s the beauty of it”
“If it was a such clear cut case why even bother getting on the plane? but that’s boxing all things can happen”
