Julio Cesar Chavez Jr retained his WBC middleweight title with a thrilling points victory over Marco Antonio Rubio at the Alamadome in Texas.
Rubio started positively in the first round, stalking his man and landing a right hook to the head but Chavez soon started to use lateral movement to keep off the ropes and avoid danger.
The hooks to the body became quite prominent in the fight from Chavez as he began to land it regularly, and from the third round onward he began to walk forward, being content to work inside for the remainder of the contest. Rubio wasn’t given an edge as he was not left with any room to get his shots off, while Chavez landed eye catching uppercuts and hooks to the head and body, mixing it up with regularity.
The eleventh round was easily the most entertaining as Chavez walked Rubio to the ropes and both guys traded big punches to the bell.
In the final round, Chavez continued to do what he was doing and worked on the inside but the fight looked like it was taking it’s toll on Rubio as Chavez was getting the better of him, but both boxers fought their hearts out to the final bell.
Scores of 118-110, 116-112 and 115-113 were read out in favour of the champion, who made it clear that he would like to face Sergio Martinez in the near future.
