TAMPA, Fla. – On Friday, February 10, Fight Night Productions and Ker’s WingHouse Bar & Grill returns to the A La Carte Event Pavilion for “WingHouse Fight Night.” This will be a special night of boxing, as Fight Night Productions will be dedicating the evening, along with a special 10-bell salute and a moment of silence, to the memory of Hall of Fame trainer, Angelo Dundee.
“The boxing world lost an iconic figure, a pioneer and a genuinely kind person, in Angelo Dundee,” said Aaron Jacobs, Chief Executive Manager of Fight Night Productions. “Mr. Dundee would attend our shows on a regular basis and would lend his support to the young, local fighters. Fight Night Productions felt that dedicating this card to memory of Mr. Dundee was a proper way to honor such a great man who did so much for our sport.”
“Angelo came to many of our Fight Night events and our crowd loved him, and he loved them right back,” added Shea Bailey, Vice Executive Manager of Fight Night Productions. “He was always very gracious with his time, and was never too busy to take a picture or shake a hand. We will truly miss Mr. Dundee, and our show on February 10th will be in honor of him.”
“I’ve known Angelo for a long time, and he was just a great man,” said Jim McLoughlin, boxing trainer/manager, patriarch of the 4th Street Boxing Gym and member of the Fight Night Productions team. “The thing that was unbelievable about Angelo was his passion for always wanting to help with the young, up-and-coming fighters. He had such an eye for talent too. He would see young fighters and just know if they had something special in them. He was also a tremendous motivator. He gets credit for being a great trainer, which he was, but he was probably a better motivator, especially when it looked like his fighter was in trouble. He’d right-the-ship, and get his guy focused no matter what.”
“WingHouse” Fight Night will be headlined by the undefeated, WBC USNBC Flyweight (115 lbs.) champion, Daniel “El Alcaran” Lozano (10-0-0, 7 KOs), who has fond memories of his interactions with the late Angelo Dundee.
“The first time I met Mr. Dundee was actually at my last amateur fight,” said Lozano, who is currently ranked seventh by the North American Boxing Association (NABA), 15th by the North American Boxing Federation (NABF), and 30th by the World Boxing Council (WBC). “I was the main event of the show and there was a buzz in the air because Mr. Dundee was in the audience.”
“I was an underdog in the fight, and ended up winning in the first round,” added Lozano. “After the fight, Mr. Dundee found me, shook my hand and said I’d be a world champion in the near future. I actually saw him a couple months ago and I was sparring with an amateur fighter. After the sparring, my partner said to me, ‘You are going to be a good pro.’ And Mr. Dundee was standing there, and said, ‘He is a good pro, he’s undefeated.’ I was shocked that not only did he remember me, but he knew my record and everything. The man just knew everything there was to know about boxing, and it’s going to be an honor to main-event a card that is dedicated to him.”
Also on this special night of boxing will be the debut of welterweight (152 lbs.) Bryant Perrella, who recently signed a promotional deal with Top Rank Boxing, Pugilist Promotions and Shea Baily Promotions. The Fort Meyers-native is one of boxing’s hottest prospects, collecting an impressive 70-9 record in the amateur ranks, and has faced some of the best competition in the nation.
“It is an honor to be making my pro debut on a card that is dedicated to such a world-renowned trainer and just all-around great man that Angelo Dundee was,” said Perrella. “Not only did Mr. Dundee train Muhammad Ali, but he also guided Sugar Ray Leonard, who was one of my favorite fighters and one of the reasons I got into boxing. This is going to be an unforgettable night.”
