BRONX, NY (February 8, 2012) – Veteran boxing promoter Joe DeGuardia had a brief respite this past Sunday, one day after promoting his second show in two weeks and a few days prior to his Star Boxing-presented ESPN Friday Night Fights show this week, at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.
A lifelong New York sports fan, Joe eagerly watched the Super Bowl with his two sons, Joseph (15) and Andrew (10), in the Bronx at a relative’s home. Joe and Joseph were thrilled that their New York Giants won, but Andrew was heartbroken his New England Patriots lost.
For some unknown reason, Andrew is a Pats fan who showed the heart of a fighter last Friday, when he entered his classroom in Westchester — filled with Giants fans — wearing a Tom Brady jersey and Patriots hat along with #12 (Brady’s number) painted on one side of his face, Patriots on the other.
“He didn’t care,” Joe said about his son being the lone dissenter among his classmates. “I was torn watching the game because one son was rooting for the Giants, the other for the Patriots. I was born and raised in the Bronx, a diehard New York sports fan. Joseph is the same as his parents (Giants, Yankees, etc.). Andrew, though, is a rebel.
“Andrew was ecstatic when the Patriots were leading. He was rubbing it in, even doing a ‘Cruz salsa dance’ after the Pats scored a touchdown. A little depressed after the game, Andrew bounced right back saying, ‘Wait until next year.’ Believe it or not, I honestly don’t know why, but Andrew is a Red Sox fan, too.”
Friday night’s fights this week should be easier for Joe to watch because both of his sons will be supporting two of Star Boxing’s most promising boxers, unbeaten 2008 U.S. Olympian Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade, and undefeated junior welterweight prospect Raymond “Tito” Serrano.
Andrade(15-0, 10 KOs) takes on former world title challenger Angel “Toro” Hernandez (30-10 (17 KOs) in the 10-round main event for the vacant North American Boxing Organization (“NABO”) junior middleweight title. Former World amateur champion Andrade – WBO #9, WBC & IBF #13 and WBA #15 – fights out of nearby Providence.
In the 10-round co-feature, WBA #15 Serrano (17-0, 8 KOs), fighting out of Philly, meets former New York State title-holder Kenny Abril (11-4-1, 6 KOs), of Rochester (NY).
A strong undercard features past and future champions and contenders, as well as some of the most promising prospects on the East Coast.
Former USBA & NABO light welterweight champion “Mighty” Mike Arnaoutis (22-7-2, 10 KOs) returns against always popular Shaka Moore (11-16-3, 2 KOs), of Norwalk (CT), in a six-round, crossroads fight.
Another undefeated Stat Boxing fighter, Bronx super featherweight prospect Emanuel Gonzalez (9-0, 7 KOs) puts his perfect record on the line against upset-minded Jesus Bayron (5-3-1, 4 KOs) in a six-round match. East Hartford super featherweight Joseph “Chip” Perez (6-1, 2 KOs) faces Jamell Tyson (2-4-1, 1 KO) in another six rounder.
Also fighting on the undercard in separate four-round bouts is a pair of promising Connecticut boxers. Waterbury junior welterweight Jair Ramos (1-0) fights Miguel Rodriguez (0-1), while New Haven super middleweight Charles Foster (1-0) faces Queens veteran Borngood Washington .
