Mark Thompson inks deal with Coldwell Boxing

Dave Coldwell of Coldwell Boxing today announced the signing of heavy hitting Heywood boxer Mark Thompson.  Thompson has not fought since registering a unanimous decision over Kevin McIntyre in a British welterweight title eliminator back in January 2010.  Thompson’s sabbatical will end on April 14 when he takes a place on Coldwell’s ‘Big Bang’ promotion, which is headlined by Tony Bellew’s British light-heavyweight title defence against Danny McIntosh.

The 28-year-old made a name for himself when stepping in at late notice to take on Vincent Vuma for the WBC International light-middleweight title in 2007.  Although lacking in experience and fighting above his usual weight, Thompson floored Vuma with a left hook to the body to make the contest interesting before succumbing in the eighth.  I bumped into Thompson late last year, he looked in good shape and confirmed that he was working hard in the gym while waiting on news of a fight.

With power in both fists, a 23-1 (14) slate and the nickname ‘The KO Kid’, a title bestowed on him by former British, Commonwealth and European 154lb boss Jamie Moore, Thompson is a lively addition to Coldwell Boxing’s roster and the latest signing has delighted Coldwell.  “With 14 KO’s from 23 wins I expect Thompson to bring excitement to Coldwell Boxing shows as we get him into title contention,” said Coldwell, who has joined forces with Matchroom’s Eddie Hearn to ensure that the Bellew bill is televised live on Sky Sports HD.
