Austin Trout Interview – No Doubt hes destined for the top

Ringnews24.com: How did you get into boxing and what age did you first start going to the gym?

Austin Trout: I was a big fan of boxing since I could remember, my mother watched a lot of fights when I was young. I remember first going into the gym at age 10, and thinking “this place is like a rocky movie”.

Ringnews24.com: Looking back as a kid what was your Dream Job? And what job would you of had if you didn’t become a Boxer?

Austin Trout: I’ve always wanted to be a professional athlete. I also wanted to be a Marine Biologist, and a wildlife show host when I got a bit older. Boxing is and always has been my dream job

Ringnews24.com:  As a child what fighters did you look up to and enjoy watching?

Austin Trout: Pernell Whitaker, Muhammad Ali, Roy Jones Jr, I have a list that could go on. I really enjoyed watching fights.

Ringnews24.com: What was your amateur record and did you win anything as an amateur boxer?

Austin Trout: It was something like 150 something wins, and 40 something losses. I was the 2004 national champion, and 2004 Olympic alternate.

Ringnews24.com: How did you find the step up from amateur to professional boxer?

Austin Trout: It took me a while to get into the professional mind frame. As far as fighting goes, I think, I just had to find my pro style and that worked for me. Just like I had to do in the amateurs.

Ringnews24.com: Who has been the biggest influence in your career so far and why?

Austin Trout: I would say my late Coach Sam DiPace, he instilled a good work ethic which I carry now to this day. Also my current coach Louie Burke, he’s a great trainer and has been in the game for a long time. I trust his guidance very much.

Ringnews24.com: What has been the best boxing advice you have received in your career so far?

Austin Trout: GOD DIDN’T BRING YOU THIS FAR FOR NO REASON!!!

Ringnews24.com:  As a boxer, do you set yourself goals that you want to achieve, or do you allow your path to be made step by step?

Austin Trout: I set goals. I have a list of long term goals and a list of short term goals. I admit the goals list changes from time to time, but i always have a goal in mind.

Ringnews24.com: Your boxing alias is  “No Doubt”,  how did that come about and is there a meaning behind it?

Austin Trout: I remember at the Olympic Trials, while looking at the posted brackets. I kept hearing a lot of the fighters come up saying “Austin Trout from New Mexico??? I DOUBT he makes it past the first round etc”. That doubt didn’t effect me because I had no doubt in myself and my God to make it through. Although I wasn’t the Olympian I made it through the trials and lost in the box off.

Ringnews24.com: Training for boxing is super intensive. You have to be in tip top shape and perform at your highest level. What keeps Austin Trout motivated?

Austin Trout: My kids, my family. I have a lot of dreams tied with my career so in order for some of these dreams to come true I’m gonna need to be at my best.  God put me in this position for a reason I can’t waste the opportunity.

Ringnews24.com: Where do you currently train and who is your trainer?

Austin Trout: I train in my hometown Las Cruces, NM. My trainer is Louie Burke.

Ringnews24.com:  Is there any part of your game you’d like to improve on or are currently working on?

Austin Trout: There’s a couple of things I would like to work on but I’m not gonna give out my faults like that. Just know they are being fixed now. (laughs)

Ringnews24.com:  You are known as a boxer who isn’t afraid to travel to get fights. On top of fighting in the USA you have fought in Mexico, Panama and Canada. Do you think winning away from home adds a little extra to each of your wins? Do you think more boxers should be willing to travel to fight?

Austin Trout: Travelling and winning in other peoples backyards is an extra oomph on the victory. There are definitely worries and extra obstacles to conquer fighting in someone else’s country. Every place I have fought though, the people were very welcoming to me. I think getting to travel and fight is an extra perk with the job. Travelling is a wonderful experience, and every fighter should take advantage of it.

Ringnews24.com: Do you find it difficult fighting away from home or do you think you gain from the experience?

Austin Trout: I gain experience, and it gets easier and easier each time.

Ringnews24.com: What country’s/venues would you would like to fight in the future?

Austin Trout: I would really like to fight in Australia, Japan, Italy, Hawaii, and of course the major spots in America (MGM, MSG, etc…).

Ringnews24.com: Who isthe dream opponent that you would like to fight at your weight level?

Austin Trout: Right now my dream opponent would be Canelo/Cotto. It’s a tie between them two.

Ringnews24.com: The Super 6 was a great success. Light middleweight is one of the top divisions right now in boxing. Would you like to see a tournament made at 154lbs and would you sign up to it?

Austin Trout: Definitely would love to see the tournament happen, only if they included all the belt holders, with maybe the exception of Cotto (lets be real he wouldn’t go for it).

Ringnews24.com: The light middleweight division is pretty packed with names, do you consider yourself the No.1 right now and if not who is the man to beat?

Austin Trout: I know I’m the Number 1 fighter in my division I just need the chance to prove it. Cotto is the man to beat, with Canelo coming in close second.

Ringnews24.com: Floyd Mayweather Jr fights Miguel Cotto on May 5 at light middleweight. Do you think there is any chance you might lure the winner of that fight into the ring?

Austin Trout: If everything went by the rules then I am the mandatory for that belt. Meaning the winner of that fight should fight me. You and me both know that’s not gonna happen, but sure would be nice if it did.

Ringnews24.com: Vanes Martirosyan defeated you as an amateur. He also went on to represent the USA at the Olympics. Amateur boxing and professional boxing are two different stages. Would you like to fight your old amateur rival now to settle the score?

Austin Trout: Most definitely! I owe Vanes one and will get that notch in my belt. I’m just trying to get my foot in and if a TV station will pick it up then let’s go for it.

Ringnews24.com: You defeated Rigoberto Alvarez, brother of WBC light middleweight champion Saul Alvarez. You have called out his brother too. Do you think that fight could happen? Has there been any talk of it being made?

Austin Trout: It could happen but it wont anytime soon in my opinion. Golden Boy is ballsy, but they’re not that Ballsy.

Ringnews24.com: Anthony Mundine is your mandatory. Is he going to be your next fight? Will it be in the USA or Australia?

Austin Trout: He’s not the mandatory anymore, because he’d rather relinquish his position than fight me. He’s a chump and irrelevant now more than ever!

Ringnews24.com: Message for the fans?

Austin Trout: Thank you all for the patience I am working on some very big things and wont be denied for very much longer. God is great and may He bless you all!
