Gary Buckland dominant against Paul Truscot
‘Dynamo’ Gary Buckland retained his BBBofC super Featherweight crown by posting a dominating performance over 12 rounds against challenger Paul Truscott. It was a victorious night for the Welshman on the Hatton Promotions show at the Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire.
Buckland of Cardiff pressured and drove the challenger back through-out the fight and Truscott had no answer to the hooks and body shots that were coming his way. Truscott really had no answer to Buckland’s tactics and was lucky not to receive a count in the third round, when he was caught with a right hand and the bottom rope kept him up.
Buckland scored a knockdown in the tenth round from a body shot near the ropes and it is full credit to Middlesbrough’s Truscott that he got up and lasted the distance. But the fight was completely one sided and I didn’t give a single round to the challenger. He was pushed back to the ropes time and again and the champion’s right hand couldn’t miss. Buckland landed every blow in the book and time and again beat Truscott to the punch.
It was a marvellous, dominant performance for the Welshman, who made this his first successful defence of the British title. Next up for the champion could be a fight against Steve Foster Jnr.
Judges scores were: 119 – 109, 120 108, 118 – 110 all in favour of the champion. I scored it 120 – 107 to Buckland.
On the undercard: Welshman Bradley Pryce scored a ten round decision victory over the bigger and younger Paul Mendy. Mendy started well but faded from the mid rounds onwards. The referee scored it 96-95 in the Welshman’s favour. Bradley said after the fight that Super Middleweight was too high a division for him and would probably move down. The fight was very close but Bradley deservedly got the nod.
