Floyd Mayweather Jr’s business advisor, Leonard Ellerbe has said that Mayweather’s bout with Miguel Cotto should be a great fight before a knockout occurs.
“This is a fight Floyd has wanted for quite some time and it never materialised. Both guys are in their prime and it should be a great contest for as long as it lasts,” said Ellerbe.
He was asked if Miguel Cotto could be the one fighter to finally be the first man to steal Mayweather’s unbeaten record.
Ellerbe said, “Here we go again, it seems like we do this over and over a thousand times. It’s this guy, that guy or it’s going to be this guy but we’re still here, still undefeated. They are all lining up to fight Floyd, everybody wants Floyd. They all want a shot at the champ. He’s called ‘Money’ Mayweather for a reason.”
When asked for a prediction, Ellerbe had no doubts that there will be a knockout.
“I think it will be a good, entertaining fight for about five rounds and then Miguel Cotto will hit the canvas. No doubt it will be a knockout.”
Miguel Cotto is a tough competitor and I do have my doubts that Mayweather can stop him at the 154lb weight class, but if his fight with Victor Ortiz is anything to go by it seems that Floyd wants to press for the knockout to perhaps go out of boxing with a bang and give the public something to remember him by. I have to disagree with Leonard Ellerbe in that Floyd is still in his prime. He is 35 years of age now, and while he hasn’t taken many punches in his career, Mayweather relies on his reflexes for his defence and these reflexes have started to show some vulnerability. This is further backed up by a statement made by Floyd’s father, Mayweather Sr shortly after the Shane Mosley bout in that he thought his son had lost some considerable speed which I agree with.
While I believe that Cotto is a somewhat faded force, I do not believe Mayweather is as “invincible” as he once was and taking into account the pedigree of the 37-2 Puerto Rican fighter, May 5th should see a tense and exciting contest!
