Cleveland’s Joey Pirrone

Joey Pirrone was the younger brother of welterweight and middleweight contender Paul “Poison” Pirrone. Paul holds a knockout victory over the legendary “Toy Bulldog”,Mickey Walker.

The younger Pirrone was a pretty decent fighter too.He fought professionally,mostly as a lightweight from 1940 to 1948. In 55 fights bouts Joey amassed a 29-25-1 record. Along the way though he crossed gloves with three world champions. He met Ike Williams,Chalky Wright and Joey Archibald in his tenure as a fighter. In 1943 at the old Cleveland Arena,Pirrone knocked down former featherweight title holder Joey Archibald 10 times on his way to an eight round decision win.
Among other notables Joey fought were Lulu Constantino (twice),Maxie Shapiro,Enrique Bolanos,Vince Foster and Spider Armstrong. Three months after his loss to Armstrong,Joey was killed in a work related accident. He was only 28 years old.
