Four time heavyweight modern heavyweight legend, Evander ‘The Real Deal’ Holyfield has said he wants the Klitschko brothers and fight for the heavyweight championship once again.
Speaking to BoxingScene.com, Holyfield said, “I am ready to fight for a world title and if the Klitschko brothers are willing to fight me in the ring, I’ll do everything in my power to win. I just need their approval to do the fight.”
Holyfield hasn’t fought since his 10th round TKO victory against Brian Nielsen in May last year but looked to be a shell of his former self against Sherman Williams, his reflexes seemingly gone before a cut stopped the bout, ending the fight in a No Contest.
The Klitschko brothers already come under plenty of fire, being accused of being “boring” for the heavyweight division and fighting mundane defence after mundane defence, so I do not see what credit could be given to them if one of them chose to fight the ageing Holyfield, who turns 50 years old in October.
The public are desperate to see some spark back in the heavyweight class once again but I would not think that a fight involving a near 50 year old former great fighter, a contest that has a very real chance of ending in a farce, would do boxing any favours.
Once too often we hear of legendary fighters kidding themselves, thinking they still have what it takes to lace up the gloves and capture their former glory, only to see them decked to the canvas by a good fighter from a more current generation.
Here is hoping that the world title organisations have some heart and do not grant Evander Holyfield a heavyweight title shot.
The only unfortunate reality is that stranger things have happened in this sport!
