Shumenov dominates Ornelas; Elegele squeaks past Lane

Tonight, while overshadowed by 4Warned on Showtime, Beibut Shumenov and Enrique Ornelas headlined a well-matched event.  The card was televised by Fox Sports and promoted by KZ Event Promotions in association with Golden Boy Promotions.  The following was my fight report for the evening:

Ravshan Hudaynazarov improved 16-0 with a very impressive Unanimous decision victory over a very game Euri Gonzalez (20-2-1).  Hudaynazarov fought well the first few rounds landing multiple heavy-handed shots flush on the steel chinned Gonzalez.  In the middle rounds Hudaynazarov started to fade and the veteran Gonzalez took advantage by landing clean shot multiple times, Gonzalez lacked the power to put Hudaynazarov in any kind of trouble.  Hudaynazarov once again took over the fight securing the final 2 rounds and winning via 79-73 on all 3 judges scorecards.   I personally scored the fight 78-74 in favor of Hudaynazarov.

Joseph Elegele (13-1-) bounced back from the first loss of his career to squeak by Philadelphia’s Lanard Lane (13-2).  Elegle dominated the fight early until the 4th round in which Lane controlled the entire round.  Elegele scored a controversial “knockdown” in the 5th, which turned out to be the deciding factor.  Lane then dominated the last 3 rounds having Elegele in trouble various times.  Elegele survived Lane’s onslaught to score a Majority Decision victory 76-76, 77-74, and 76-75 by the judges at ringside.  I personally scored the fight 76-75 in favor of Elegele.

Daquan Arnett (4-0) has his hands full with rugged Yosami Abreu (2-3-1) over the course of 4 rounds.  Arnett busted up Abreu early and dropped him in the 2nd round.  That did not deter the valiant Abreu who kept the fight close, never backing down.  Arnett stayed undefeated via 4 round Unanimous Decision.  The judge’s scorecards read 39-36, 40-35, and 40-35 in favor of Daquan Arnett.  I also scored the fight 40-35 in favor of Arnett.

Beibut Shumenov (13-1) successfully defended his WBA Light Heavyweight Title against an uninspired Enrique Ornelas (33-8) via a 12 round Unanimous Decision.  Early in the fight Shumenov beating Ornelas around the ring, having Ornelas in trouble several times throughout the early rounds.  As Ornelas settled in he became slightly more aggressive but definitely not doing enough to win more than 1 round.  Shumenov displayed accurate punching, power, and endurance.  Shumenov put on an absolutely near perfect performance with the judge’s scoring the fight 120-108 across the board with myself in agreement.
