Matchroom Sport to make major boxing announcement

Eddie Hearn hosting media day on August 28

Matchroom Sport will make a huge announcement for British boxing on August 28 at a media day at their headquarters in Essex.

Hearn’s stable of exciting British stars and future talent will assemble in front of the media in Brentwood as they all stand on the cusp of huge fights in their careers.

The promoter says that the news will excite the fans as the new season approaches on September 8, where Darren Barker and Tony Bellew headline a massive show at Alexandra Palace in north London, live on Sky Sports.

“I am very excited about the future of British boxing and our announcement on August 28 will send a strong message to the fans,” said Hearn. “The Olympics breathed even more life into the sport and we aim to capitalise on the love there is out there for boxing with some great shows in the coming season, and I think that our media day will stoke the fires even further.”

Barker returns to action after almost a year out of the ring following his heroic World title challenge against Sergio Martinez in Atlantic City on October 1, and faces the Italian middleweight champion Simone Rotolo for the IBF Inter Continental middleweight title. Bellew continues his charge towards a second shot at a light heavyweight World title and meets hard-hitting Edison Miranda in a mouth-watering clash for the WBC International belt.

Two weeks later the attention turns to Belfast with Carl Frampton headlining a huge show in his hometown, then the first Betfair Prizefighter night of the new season takes place at the Liverpool Olympia on October 6 with a dream lightweight line-up featuring Anthony Crolla, Derry Mathews and Gary Sykes – before local hero and Prizefighter champ Rocky Fielding fights for his first title against Wayne Reed for the Central Area super middleweight crown.

Kell Brook steps into the ring at the Motorpoint Arena Sheffield on October 20 in an eliminator for the mandatory position for the IBF welterweight title against Argentine Hector Saldivia and then Britain’s number one fighter Carl Froch defends his IBF super middleweight belt for the first time in a November show to be announced next week.
