Referee Tony Weeks who does a good job with his Spanish in the ring and worked Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s fight against Troy Rowland. Chavez won by Unanimous Decision but later tested positive for an illegal diuretic, furosemide, which he used to make weight. Chavez Jr was subsequently given a seven months suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission. The illegal diuretic drug was given to Chavez by his physician Dr. Jose Salazar after Chavez was in a hospital for ten days while being treated for exhaustion and dehydration.
None of the judges have ever worked either Julio Cesar Chavez Jr of Sergio Martinez’s fight before. But a note of interest is that Dave Moretti worked four of Julio Sr’s fights including the 1990 Ring Magazine’s “Fight of the Year” with Meldrick Taylor. The fight was called “Thunder and Lightning” and it was all that. Chavez Sr dropped Taylor after connecting with a left handed uppercut and followed it with a thunderous right hand and crashing down to the floor went Taylor. At the count of 5, Taylor was up but did not respond when referee Richard Steele asked him if he was alright, Steele then waived off the fight with :02 seconds left in the fight.
Dave Moretti was the judge for that fight and had it scored 107-102 for Taylor as did Jerry Roth 108-101 while Chuck Giampa had it 105-104 for Chavez.
Dave Moretti worked Julio Sr’s fight with Willie Wise and scored it 92-98 in a UD loss for Julio Sr. Moretti worked Julio Sr’s fight with Marty Jakulowski, the fight ended in a 6 round TKO win for Chavez. Moretti worked Julio Sr’s fight with Lonnie Smith and scored it 119-107 in a UD win for Julio Sr. Moretti worked Julio Sr’s fight against Sammy Fuentes and scored it 98-91 for Chavez Sr.
