Wayne McCullough on Macklin vs Alcine:

“Macklin Can Win A World Title”

Wayne McCullough returns to the Primetime commentary booth on 15th September for Chavez Jr vs Martinez live from the Thomas & Mack Centre in Las Vegas. We sat down with the ‘Pocket Rocket’ to discuss the fights, beginning with fellow British-Irish fighter Matthew Macklin.

Macklin returns to fight in America for the second time following him late stoppage loss to Sergio Martinez. Macklin put on a valiant display against Martinez, troubling him in the early rounds before succumbing to Martinez’s power. That performance, hot on the heels of his split decision loss to then WBA Champion Felix Sturm, has put Macklin in position close to another World Title shot.

First he has to face challenger Joachim Alcine. Alcine is a former WBA Light Middleweight champion who is aiming to make another run at a world title.

“Macklin has a good opportunity against Alcine.” said McCullough.

“I’ve watched a few of his fights and he has an awkward style. If Macklin can get close to him and works the body, and works the head he can get a stoppage.”

“Matthew has the Irish pedigree and background so he’s going to get a following in America. There’s something like over 40 million Irish Americans of some descent. They love the way he fights, he comes to fight all the time and fans over here like to see that. He’s exciting and if he puts on a good performance in Las Vegas the skies the limit for him”

“Justice was served the other night when Sturm was beaten, I think Matthew should have gotten the result in their fight.”

“Against Martinez it was a different level, when I fought Hamed and Morales they were in their prime and I competed for 12 rounds with them. But it’s a different level from the world class to the elite class. You either get up there and try to compete, or you get knocked out and unfortunately he got knocked out against Martinez – who’s in an elite class.”

“Macklin is still young enough though. He has time to gain more experience and with that he can win a World Championship.”
