Francis Warren of Queensberry Promotions today confirmed at their Liverpool press conference, that they will host a big night of championship boxing in the city on Friday 9th November at the Olympia, with Paul Butler’s eagerly awaited British Super-Flyweight title showdown against John Donnelly set to headline the card, live on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).

Butler heads into the contest following an impressive win over 12 rounds against a much bigger Ashley Sexton who had failed to make the weight back in . His fight with Donnelly for the vacant British title will have added impetus as the two are both Merseysiders which is sure to give the contest some exciting local derby spice. Butler said, “I can’t wait for the fight, I want to pick up where I left off in the Sexton fight and get hold of that Lonsdale belt.” whilst Donnelly, who has shared a ring with Butler before in some heated sparring sessions, was similarly confident and said, “I will win the fight, I will be British champion and beat Paul, I know I’ve got the edge on him”

Two of Britain’s most famous boxing brothers, Paul and Liam Smith also confirmed that they will both be in action on the card. For Paul it marks the return to the ring following a long absence after his stoppage loss to George Groves in October last year, and he told reporters that he will be eyeing the winner of Kenny Anderson and Robin Reid’s British Super Middleweight Title clash. He said “I spoke with Robert Smith from the BBBofC asking if I was going to get the shot with Anderson after Groves vacated. But he said that they couldn’t make Anderson wait for another purse bid, which would have to happen if he had to face me. So instead they have confirmed that I’ll be slotted in as the mandatory for the winner.” Smith will be in action in a ten rounder and will look to dust off any ring rust and get himself ready for the Anderson v Reid winner in a likely early 2013 showdown.

Younger brother Liam fights Gary McMillan in a British light-middleweight title eliminator, and will if successful would be hoping to join Paul on a bill in the new year where both are fighting for their own respective versions of the Lonsdale belt.

Former amateur star Matty Fagan will also be in action on the bill making his pro debut, and will be looking to hit the ground running in the paid ranks. Fagan having singed pro terms exclusively with Queensberry said ” I just can’t wait for the first bell, I know I can some real waves in the pro ranks and my amateur success shows that I’m more than capable of doing that.”

The bill marks Queensberry’s first show in Liverpool, and promoter Francis Warren hopes to see it followed by many more, he said “Liverpool is such a great city for culture and sport, you’ve got the two huge football teams, you’ve got the history of it’s vibrant music scene, and you’ve got a growing list of great boxing talent born and bred in the city.”

“This is the first of many exciting cards that we hope to bring here to further develop our guys and build their profiles; and the eventual aim is of course to work towards staging some big events at the fantastic Echo Arena.”

Tickets, priced at £30, £40 and £60 are available from Ticketmaster on 0844 844 0444 or www.ticketmaster.co.uk
