Light Welterweight Champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16KOs) retained his belts when he defeated the very game veteran Zab ‘Super” Judah (42-0, 39KOs) in a very entertaining twelve round Championship fight. Garcia made another defense of his titles at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, New York, fighting in front of a crowd who showed up to support Brooklyn’s own Judah.
Going into the fight many fans and experts felt that the quick Judah would give Garcia fits with his speed and defense. But in the early rounds it was Garcia who dominated the fight, setting the pace and discouraging Judah from taking any unnecessary risks. Judah fought in spurts in the early rounds, electing to fight from the outside and using the ring to avoid Garcia’s power. Garcia’s advantage in power was evident and his right hand found the target often. In the 8th round he connected with his power punch, dropping Judah to the canvas. The momentum of the fight changed in the last rounds of the fight and Judah found success connecting with his left hand. He bravely fought back and showed glimpses of the talent that made him a Champion in the past. In the end Garcia was simply too young and strong for Judah and won on all cards with scores of 115-112, 114-112, and 116-111.
After the fight Garcia hinted that his time fighting at Light Welterweight was coming to an end in the near future, and that we could see him jumping to the more high profiled division where fighters like Guerrero, Mayweather, and possibly Amir Khan await. There is a possibility that Garcia last fight at 140 could be against the winner of the May 18th fight between Lamont Peterson and Lucas Matthysse.
