DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (June 4, 2013) — Unbeaten Dominican featherweight Claudio “The Matrix” Marrero (14-0, 11 KOs), ranked No. 2 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), could face Argentinean Jesus Andres Cuellar (22-1, 18 KOs) for the vacant WBA interim featherweight title sometime this coming July at a venue to be determined. Acquinity Sports promoter Henry Rivalta reports that negotiations with the Argentine team are close to being finalized.
“We are finalizing details of this fight now and discussions with Sebastian Contursi, Team Cuellar’s representative, indicate that this fight can probably be made for this July,” Rivalta said. “We have yet to determine the precise date and place for this fight, which we understand will feature, face-to-face, two of the top ranked WBA featherweight fighters.
“It’s a pleasure for us at Acquinity Sports to work with someone like Sebastian Contursi. We are sure that we will soon have an agreement. Also, we wish to express our gratitude to advisor Ricardo Rizzo for all the support he has given us to make this fight.
“Jesus Cuellar is a good fighter with a great style and power in both hands. However, Claudio Marrero, in our opinion, is one of the best warriors in the featherweight division. We are confident in his skills to capture another title for our team.”
In only 14 fights, 11 ending in knockouts, Marrera has become one of the most spectacular featherweights in the world. Now, as the top-ranked featherweight in the WBA, he is preparing to fight the No. 5 ranked Cuellar.
The Dominican is confident of reaching his goal to become world champion, saying, “I’m ready to fight the best. These type of fights are what we are looking for to become the best 126-pound fighter. We know that there are some great Argentine fighters at this time – (Sergio) Martinez, (Marcus) Maidana and (Lucas) Matthysse – and that those 3M’s are making a loud noise in professional boxing. With us, though, it’s a different story, but I’m the top ranked contender and I will defend my place when I go up against Cuellar.”
While legal representatives for both fighters are trying to finalize an agreement as soon as possible, Marrero continues his training camp with his coach, German Cicedo, at German Caicedo Gym in Miami. He’s convinced that this fight versus Cuellar is the opportunity he has been waiting for to solidify his name in the featherweight division.
