Ahead of his U.S debut as a Professional fighter on July 5th, Eleider “Storm” Alvarez (12-0, 8 KOs) sat down with Ringnews24 and discussed his thoughts on his upcoming fight, what it means for his career to headline a card with Allan Green, among other things.
Alvarez is coming off a TKO win against Nicholson Poulard on March 22 from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada and will be facing the dangerous Allan “Ghost Dog” Green (32-4, 22 KOs). Alvarez, a 2008 Colombian Olympian who lives in Montreal, is on his way to positioning himself for a world title shot. He is currently ranked No. 4 by the World Boxing Association (WBA) and No. 7 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO).
RingNews24: How do you feel about making your debut as a pro in the US?
I feel very happy and excited since I fought (in the US) as an amateur, and now I get to fight as a pro.
RingNews24: What do you know about Allan Green?
I know that he possesses a good jab and a good left cross, he doesn’t like to fight on the inside, he favors fighting from middle distance and outside.
RingNews24: Do you think that fighting in the U.S. is an advantage for Green?
It can be an advantage because he is fighting in his country and they know him, but I am prepared and very motivated.
RingNews24: Many feel that this is your toughest fight up to now? What’s your opinion?
Yes, You can say that he is my toughest fight yet because he is a better known boxer, but all my fights are a test and it doesn’t matter who I fight, I need to show I am a better fighter.
RingNews24: What adjustments do you need to make to fight someone like Green?
Always be ready, keep my eyes open and guard high, and win the war of jabs because I also have a good jab.
RingNews24: With 8 KOs in 12 fights you are making a name as a hard puncher, is your plan to go for the KO?
I always have the KO in my head. I welcome a win by KO but I prepare for 12 rounds in case we don’t get the KO. I prepare well physically so that I can finish the fight and win a decision.
RingNews24: Have you prepared differently for this fight? Who are you sparring with?
I prepare as I always do, hard and with dedication. I spar with many boxers from the area of Montreal who have similar styles to Green. This is a great advantage for me.
RingNews24: This is without a doubt a very important fight in your career. What is the pressure to not only win but look great?
Absolutely, this is an important fight because I am headlining a fight on ESPN against Allan Green who is the biggest name on my resume. A lot of fans want to see me against Green and we know it will be a good fight. And this is also 50 Cent’s first show as a promoter. But I don’t feel pressure because I know I am doing things right.
Ringnews24.com: You were supposed to fight Green on many occasions but they kept changing the date. Has this affected you at all?
I don’t feel it has affected me because I keep training as usual. If anything I’ve had more time to incorporate new things to my training routine I didn’t have the time to do before.
RingNews24: What do you do when you are not training for a fight? How do you spend your time?
I like to play videogames (PlayStation), Football (soccer), chat online, listen to music, watch Colombian movies and more than anything just hang out with friends in Montreal.
RingNews24: Speaking of football (soccer), how do you see the Colombian team? Do you think they will qualify to the World Cup?
The Colombian team is doing well. It’s been a while since we saw the team play like this and we are 3 points away from qualifying with 4 games to play (at the time of interview). If anything goes wrong then we are just out of luck (laughs).
RingNews24: Any messages to your fans, friends, etc.?
To my growing group of fans I’d like to say Thank you for all your support and please continue supporting me.
