Gennady Golovkin vs. Curtis Stevens Must Be Made

After demolishing Saul Roman last night, on the NBC Sports Network, Curtis Stevens was asked if he was going to really push the envelope, if he was going to challenge himself like he never has before in a boxing ring, if he was going to fight Gennady GGG Golovkin.

This would be one of the best fights for the paying boxing fans. It is a fight not only two punchers, but boxers with skills. Both Stevens and GGG are bonebreakers, but they also put punches together very well, they do not waste a lot of energy, and they are both very accurate. To dismiss either one of these guys as wild brawlers is a mistake.

It is also the best fight for both of these men.

For Stevens, he will most likely earn his biggest payday for a GGG fight. More importantly, he will find out just how good he really is. GGG is on a tier in boxing right now without many peers. He is as good as it gets in the year of 2013 and Curtis Stevens should relish a chance to see if he could hang with this level.

Golovkin is so good, even a loss could earn Stevens lot of stock and credibility. There are few fighters in this era that can provide this opportunity, and Stevens and his team should embrace it.

For Golovkin, it is a no brainer to take this fight. He is not going to get a major PPV bonanza this calendar year, so he might as well finish it out against a big puncher. Critics of GGG want to see him fight tougher competition, against guys who can bang. Yes, he has it all, but what happens when he gets hit? So far, GGG has not fought anyone with a real legitimate punch. Stevens no doubt provides that.

It is one thing to move forward and commit to the pocket with stiff punches against guys who do not posses legit one punch power, ( the rarest attribute in this sport), but how does a fighter approach his opponent when he knows there will be heavy artillery coming back in return?

GGG has been hit solid in his recent fights against men who were formidable, respectable, but not killer punches. The fans want to see how GGG handles an opponent who is on his level with punching power.

GGG has to want this fight as well. He has to want to know what it is like to face someone on his level in terms of punching power and who possess a fine skill set, he has yet to have this experience and Curtis Stevens is the best candidate to meet this criterion for a November fight.

Gennady Golovkin vs. Curtis Stevens is a special fight that will provide action, however long it lasts, and answer certain questions for both fighters which have not been asked yet.

Only downside is someone will lose, and lose badly. Make no mistake about it; this fight will end in violent and bloody fashion.

I cannot think of a better way to kick off the 2013 holiday season.
