Joshua mentally strong enough for pro ranks?

Promoter Eddie Hearn claims that new signing Anthony Joshua has the mental ability to become world champion in the professional game.

Reported on givemesport.com, he said, “He’s got the mental attributes to capitalise on Olympic gold.

“I think within three years he’ll be ready for world titles. If we’re looking at him boxing eight times a year, he’ll be 24-0 at the end of a three-year period.

“By that stage he’ll be able to look at world titles, but he’s got the foundations of potentially a world heavyweight champion and that’s what makes us so excited.”

I think what sticks in the minds of the public right now is the big question of whether Joshua will end up becoming another Audley Harrison and show himself to become a huge failure after some big promises. We probably will not get the answers when he makes his professional debut on October 5th at the 02 arena as a boxer’s first fight rarely, if ever, tells us anything of value. People rapidly predicted that James DeGale would quickly be recognised for being a big bore in the ring after his first cagey performance but that was soon forgotten with his follow up knockout wins, shattering that memory. What Anthony Joshua is made of will be revealed next year, in 2014 and I am sure most, if not all of us, are hoping that he will also shatter our memories of a post Olympic gold Audley Harrison struggling with the likes of Martin Rogan and Domonick Guinn.

We will see.
