In what should be an explosive encounter, Newcastle warrior Dougie Curran and Hartlepool prospect Peter Cope will clash for the Northern Area super-featherweight title at Dunston’s Lancastrian Suite on Friday September 13.
The battle will headline Steve Wraith’s ‘Friday Fright Night’ show and the Newcastle promoter is rightly excited by the bill-topper and supporting cast he has secured for the event.
“Cope versus Curran has been talked about for months and I can guarantee that this will be one of those fights that will live up to the hype,” stated Wraith. “Both fighters have a lot to lose, both have trained hard and it’s definitely a 50-50 fight. Peter’s ‘Barmy Army’ will travel in numbers but Dougie will have the support from a boisterous home crowd. It’s a hard one to call and as a relatively new promoter I’m delighted to have such a big fight so early.
“The undercard is packed with quality too with Paul O’Hagan and Andy Buchanan ready to entertain the crowd, along with the stylish Tommy Ward. Another one to watch is Lewis Scott; the lad’s very special. Craig Nicholson will get the show underway and he is delighted to be fighting in front of his home crowd for the first time. With a year under my belt I’m already looking forward to the next one and beyond.”

You’re facing Dougie Curran for the Northern Area title on Sept 13 – how is your preparation going ahead of the fight?
It’s gone so well up to now. I’ve been doing a lot of different things, I’m back to my old self and ready to go!
Dougie has been in with some of the country’s best fighters, very rarely gets stopped and has even been the distance with new world champ Kiko Martinez. How tough a test is this for you?
It’s my hardest fight to date plus he’s the home fighter so I’m looking forward to the challenge of going to the lion’s den and taking the title. I expect a real hard 10 round war.
Will the fact that the fight is scheduled for 10 rounds be a factor?
Not for me. I’ve done 10 before at a red hot pace and I know Dougie has done it a few times. We both like to fight so the more rounds the better!
How do you see the fight panning out and what is your prediction?
I think it will be a real hard fight. Whoever gets their game plan off can win this fight and I’ve got a headache off my dad [trainer] non-stop drilling into my head what I have to do! It will be a Peter Cope win, no matter which way.
