Mayweather Sr Talks Mayweather Jr vs Canelo amongst other things

Jenna J: On The Ropes again making his 24th appearance is former welterweight boxer and current trainer to his son, I welcome Floyd Joy Mayweather Snr. Floyd, hows things going today?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: I’m doing great.

Jenna J: That’s good to hear. Floyd, hows the training camp going so far with your son?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: My son is looking good, he’s looking awesome you know. People are seeing one thing you know, but we see another.

Jenna J: OK, well the fights right around the corner now, Floyd. Have you guys thought about how you will go about fighting Canelo?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: We wanna start of boxing him for the first three or four rounds , four or five rounds an then from there pick the pace up on him. We seen that when he fought Trout, he didn’t have that much stamina.

Jenna J: Now Floyd, when you look at that Trout fight, did you see the blueprint to beat Canelo based on the fact that fight was so close?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: Well we thought he fought a close fight with Trout, even though he knocked him down, the fight was still close. Floyd is a much better fighter than Trout, I’m not taking nothing away from Trout, but it is what it is.

Jenna J: Floyd, what do you make of the catch-weights for this fight, why do you think there had to be a 152 pounds catch-weight?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: I didn’t like that at all, any time anyone can punch, you don’t give them anything, especially like weight, that’s one thing you don’t give them. In my honest opinion, I don’t see that he’s got the skills but he’s got the speed because he’s a young man, but Floyd’s gonna beat him in that category too. Floyd’s got the speed, the finesse, the quickness of jabs, the counter-punching you know. Floyd got the whole package so he got a whole bunch of things to deal with, that’s like dealing with five or six guys.

Jenna J: Floyd, do you worry that people aren’t gonna give your son as much credit for beating Canelo because he fought him at a catch-weight ? A lot of people made fun of Pacquiao for that, saying that he fought a lot of people at catch-weight?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: What you mean they aint gonna give him credit !? They aint gonna give him credit ! Floyd’s the smaller guy, he’s the one who’s coming up to fight Canelo!
He’s the one that cant make the weight, not Floyd. I don’t think we should be talking about Floyd, we should be talking about him. We gotta do the catch-weight for him, not Floyd. Floyd makes his weight and this guy here cant make his weight, that’s the problem. Whatever they say they cant say nothing because Floyd is going to a much bigger class, that’s five pounds up for little Floyd. Floyd can make 140, Floyd can fight at 140 and this guy here is a junior middleweight and he’s a big junior middleweight. They cant say nothing no matter what happens because Floyd didn’t call it to be made at no certain weight, he didn’t do that. He called it.

Jenna J: Well Floyd there are people that will point to that, that’s not me doing that personally, I think its fine for the fight to take place there because Floyd is coming up in weight, but people will point towards the fact that Floyd fought Cotto and De La Hoya at 154 but he’s making something different for Canelo.

Floyd Mayweather Snr: You saying because little Floyd did what? He fought both of them at 154, and Floyd didn’t even weigh 154 then and he beat both of them at 154. What are they gonna say about this guy right here. If he cant make his weight that’s on him, who cares. I aint gonna talk about Floyd because of some shit that he gone did, so I dont care how Floyd do, he cant win anyway. He gave the man weight an everything else, so I mean what does he have to do?

Jenna J: Floyd, the perception out there is that Canelo is gonna be a threat to your son because he is a bigger and younger guy?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: But why you gonna talk about he’s a bigger guy now and then if Floyd beats him then they gonna talk about Floyd s weight !  What in the hell, I don’t understand that!

Jenna J: That’s boxing, that’s boxing Floyd, you know that better than anybody! They never give a guy full credit for anything.

Floyd Mayweather Snr: I know that I know that, I’m just saying that how can they say that, they talking crazy if they talking that way. I know how boxing is, but Floyd’s the one that’s coming up to fight him!
Floyd can make his weight easy, Floyd can make 140. Floyd aint never been overweight, never ever.

Jenna J: Well Floyd, regardless of the weight for the fight, I mean do you look at Canelo there and see any threat to your son compared to any of the other opponents that your son has beat?
Is there anything different?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: No, I don’t see a threat, no I don’t. He’s gonna be about as big a threat as the last guy he fought, what was his name, Guererro yeah, Guererro. He’s about as big a threat as he gonna have, and there it is. And they all talking that big talk, and all that big stuff, they gonna get the chance to show all what they been talking about now.

Jenna J: Well you say about all the talk of the fight, Oscar De La Hoya has been talking a lot about the fight and he does that for every particular opponent he puts against Floyd, but for this fight its a little different.
He seems a little more confident. Why do you think that is?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: All you gotta say is, I like De La Hoya as a person, but right now this is me and my son. But my son is against De La Hoya at this moment and I am too because he has his opinions and aint nothing wrong with his opinions and I have my opinion and aint nothing wrong with my opinion. My opinion is, we gonna kick his ass, simple.

Jenna J: Do you think Oscar really believes what he is saying or do you think he’s just promoting?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: I don’t believe he believes that, he’s hoping that, but I don’t believe he believes that. Look here, the whole thing is that even though me an De La Hoya, we close you know, whenever we see each other we embrace each other and I have a lot of love for De La Hoya. But this right here is on a whole new level, that’s my son, that’s my blood and hey, I aint going against that so he can say what he wishes there’s nothing wrong with that. But we coming to kick his ass, simple.

Jenna J: Floyd, you mention your sons your blood, this is the great thing about his last two fights you know against Guererro and this one coming up, your working with your son again. How has that chemistry been for yourselves and how have you guys avoided bumping heads like you used to?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: Well me and my son aint never really bumped no heads, well I guess me and my son have bumped heads quite a few times, I guess we have I’ve thought about it now. Its been about three times that stuff has happened that got on the TV so you are very correct, so let me straighten that out myself. Everything is straight with us, everything seems to be going well like I said. He brought me in, I didn’t ask to come in, he brought me in and evidently he went to jail and thought about it, I cant tell you. I don’t know what the deal was. He did ask me to come in and when I did you see how well we done.

Jenna J: Well I was just about to bring that up to you, I was just about to say because of the fact that you had experiences you know earlier in your life with jail and that he was getting out of jail. Do you think that it might have brought you two closer because he went through that?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: It could have been. You know one thing about jail, he wasn’t really in there that long but it was enough to show him what it is. He wasn’t in there long but the way they did that thing with him and him staying in and everyone else was out talking with each-other and going out with each-other and then when its time for him to play he got to be out there playing by himself. Who wants to do that, your in jail but you think your gonna be with some more people talking and conversing things you know and mixing yourself up but you cant do that though. They way they had him they had him locked up in a different type of manner you know.

Jenna J: Now Floyd, the chemistry between you and your son it was apparent in the last fight with Robert Guererro, it showed differences, he was just getting hit less, he was using his feet more. What things when you got to camp did you cautiously try and correct things that maybe he had forgotten and gotten away from when he was working with just Roger?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: The main thing I’m doing is, my son knows how top fight anyway, I taught him how to fight he knows how to fight. I’m just saying that, I’m just making sure that he knows how to fight so all I have to do is work on his defence and its not hard working on it because he comes right to it, right away. When I tell him something he knows right away and he executes, so its not a problem.

Jenna J: Floyd in regards to the fight with Canelo, there are people actually saying that your son could knock out Canelo. Do you think its possible that it could happen?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: Yes I do, I really, really do I’ve been telling people that. I aint saying that he’s gonna knock him out early but he could, I’m just saying that I aint even gonna say what were gonna do, you’ll see what were gonna do yourself. I already know what were gonna do and I think that if he don’t get stopped he’s gonna get beat up real bad. He can either do one or the other, he can either come to fight that night or he can stay at home.

Jenna J: If a knock-out does come how do you think it will happen ? Do you think it will be one shot or accumulation?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: Well you know Floyd’s a boxer, he’s not portrayed to be no one punch knock-out man, but he can do that. Believe me the way he’s doing things right now, he can do that believe me he can do that. If you look for him and it doesn’t happen an then Canelo gets warn down and then he gets stopped it don’t make no difference, a stoppage is a stoppage. You can look for it to happen one way or the other, I’m just saying that he aint gonna stop Canelo, I’m just saying that it is in the mix right there, that’s is definitely in the mix. As far as him winning, hey that’s way beyond even what Canelo can even think about what’s gonna happen to him. That’s way beyond.

Jenna J: You mention that’s way beyond Floyd, the bookmakers actually have this fight the closest of any fight that Floyd has had in a very long time. How do you see it?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: But guess what they always have it that way close with Floyd or he could wupp Floyd. How many wupped Floyd, how many wupped him, how many wupped him ? Zero, none.
So that aint nothing but talk just like everybody else talks. When his lip gets chipped an as soon as his lip gets chipped guess what, somebody else goes an talks. Somebody else gonna talk big too and they gonna get it an then what. Its the same old thing, its OK but its the same old thing, it aint nothing different.

Jenna J: Floyd, picking it up that it is different, I recently had the chance to speak with Freddie Roach and he kind of surprised me at the end of the interview. I asked him what would be the dream fight for any of his fighters, and he said I still wanna see the fight the whole world wants to see, Mayweather vs Pacquiao. Ive gotta ask you, not your perspective on that fight but Roach’s perspective. Do you think fans even want to see that fight any more?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: I’m gonna be honest with you, I haven’t even heard Pacquiao’s name come up in quite a while. I’m just telling you aint nobody even talking about no Pacquiao and Floyd.
Aint nobody talking about Pacquiao. Freddie can forget about it now because he should have enough money to go and be able to sit down somewhere. He got enough money from stealing off everybody else and doing all that crooked stuff. He can go and sit down somewhere now. Pacquiao got knocked out and Floyd beat the guy who beat Pacquiao, and Floyd beat him like a baby, like he owned him. So what is he talking about, Freddie the joke coach Roach, that’s a joke right there. Everything he says is a joke, I look at it as a joke, thats what he is he is a joke. He knows damn well himself in his own mind that if he is true with himself he knows Pacquiao cant wupp Floyd, he knows that, he knows that, he aint crazy, he knows.

Jenna J: Then why do you think he wants the fight Floyd?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: Because he wants to get some more money in his pocket, that’s the only reason aint no other reason. He knows Pacquiao cant wupp Floyd. Floyd aint scared to fight no Pacquiao, but we aint gonna worry about that. Pacquiao wont ever get in the picture now, we aint gotta worry about that, we got another set up done so we aint gotta worry about no Pacquiao. He’s the least of our worries, and right now aint nobody thinking about Pacquiao everybody knows it Floyd’s show, everybody knows it Floyd’s show now. Pacquiao can go but nobody worried about no Pacquiao no more, Pacquiao old news. He already knows what’s gonna happen anyway, he can wish and hope, he can wish and hope if he think he can get his man to load up on that, you know what I mean. We aint gonna worry about that like I’m telling you right now, we aint gonna give Freddie Roach no big pay-day again. That’s all he’s been doing, getting pay-days for illegal supplements, that’s what I think and believe.

Jenna J:  Floyd, speaking of Pacquiao, I know your not thinking about him at all but he’s got a fight with Brandon Rios. Do you think he can even win that type of fight after the type of knock-out he suffered?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: That’s what I’m trying to tell you anyway, what’s he called that knocked him ice cold, hey I mean lets be for real, what is going on ? Freddie Roach knows better, he knows Pacquiao cant wupp my son. And then this guy Rios, I don’t even know this guy Rios, but the way it sounds to me a lot of people are saying that Pacquiao might have a chance and he might not, I don’t know Rios, who is Rios?

Jenna J: Brandon Rios is a former lightweight champion and a contender at 140 pounds. He’s a strong come ahead guy, he takes quite a lot of punches but he lands quite a few himself. He’s a pressure guy.

Floyd Mayweather Snr: Yeah, I heard that he can take a whole bunch of punches. That’s a big deal then, Floyd don’t take all that. I’m just telling you that Oscar is a nice guy, I like Oscar but hey, he’s on the opposite side of the fence right now, and right now I’m gonna take care of my business stay on the case and run my place.

Jenna J: Floyd, let me ask you this quickly, one last thing on Pacquiao. When I spoke to you after his knock-out loss, you said that Pacquiao should go and be the Filipino president and retire from boxing. Do you think he can come back from that type of knock-out loss?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: I can see Rios probably beating him even though I aint ever seen Rios but, I can see Rios beating him from the standpoint of keeping pressure on him, he might be hitting Rios but he probably wont knock Rios out, unless he’s like the Pacquiao he was of old. If he aint then guess what, we already know what’s gonna happen, if he dont do that, oh my goodness.

Jenna J: Floyd, I’ve just got a couple more questions before I let you off the line. On the under-card of the fight between your son and Canelo, there’s an interesting match between Danny Garcia and Lucas Matthysse. They are talking that the winner of that fight could be next for your son. What do you see in the Garcia Matthysse fight and what do you see as the guy you want to face after?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: That’s fine between either one of them, that’s fine. They gonna get wupped too, trust me. As you can see since you’ve been doing this type of thing, you say what’s gonna be happening. Matthysse is the one that knocked out from Washington, Lamont Peterson. So I think its gonna be a real, real interesting fight right there. I’m just gonna tell you that both of them can crack, and I thin I’m gonna go with Matthysse.

Jenna J: You think that Lucas Matthysse can maybe knock-out Danny Garcia?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: I think so. To me Garcia fighting with Zab Judah he didn’t show me nothing, he didn’t show me anything. It looked like Zab Judah was coming bad and winning or making the fight kind of close, but you know it is what it is you know, he didn’t do what he could of did because I think he could of beat Garcia. I think he could of beat him and that’s one reason I think because the way that guy right there fought with that Peterson boy, I think he’s gonna beat Garcia, that’s what I think.

Jenna J: If Lucas Matthysse wins, they are gonna want to set up a fight between Matthysse and your son. Stylistically fans would enjoy seeing it, but do you think people would want to buy that as a PPV?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: If he knocks out the guy that knocked out Judah, then people know what’s going on, people gonna talk about that particular fight. I aint gonna say it will be a fight like this right here with Alvarez but I’m telling you that its gonna be a big fight though. One thing is its Floyd’s name that is gonna do something and its against a guy that beat the Peterson boy so beating the Peterson boy and then beating Garcia, people are gonna want to see that fight.  Believe me they gonna want to see that fight. I’m not saying that its gonna be bigger than Canelo’s but its gonna be a big fight.

Jenna J: Floyd, right now in boxing, and this is one of the big questions right now. Who out there an compete with your son or beat your son ? While people say a Matthysse fight will be good they don’t say he can beat Floyd while they say Canelo fight might be interesting they don’t say he can beat him. Do you see anyone coming up, anyone out there that can possible challenge your son, an Adrien Broner anybody. Do you see anyone out there

Floyd Mayweather Snr: No, no. I don’t see anybody, people ask me about Broner lately, but I tell them the truth what I think. From what I’ve seen Broner fight and the guys I’ve seen Broner fight and them guys that hit Broner, they cant really fight. Some guys are hitting Broner with good clear shots, they can not fight. I seen two of them do it so far and neither one of them, I know Floyd would knock-out both them. Both of them guys and I don’t know their names, all I know is that all they will ever be known as is fighters without a name. I’m just telling you that Floyd is crafty and swift and slick and fast, hey that’s pretty much the way it will be all the things I just spoke on, these are the things that Floyd will use against his opponent and take him apart.

Jenna J: Floyd, what is your official prediction between the September the fourteenth fight between Floyd Mayweather Jnr, your son, and Saul Canelo Alvarez.
How do you see it playing out from the opening bell to the finish?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: Well, I cant say that he will knock him out, but there is a good chance that he will. If he don’t get knocked out, he is going ton take a beating, trust me. The first time you get tired on Floyd, it is over, I can tell you that right now. I’m gonna tell Floyd to go get him and then everybody will talk about what they wanna talk about, they have been talking about this boy since he started. Every hater, all the haters hate winners. Floyd is a winner, that’s what he is.

Jenna J:  Floyd, one final question, and this is for you as a trainer. You’ve been in boxing for a long time, you’ve trained a lot of fighters, you’ve brought a lot of fighters to championships. In this final run with your son, do you think you can get that recognition finally. A lot of people know on the inside they know what  great trainer you are, but get the official recognition?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: Look here now, I don’t care none. I trained my son to be the fighter that he is today. Roger had his moments of training my son but Roger trained my son to roll his shoulders and catch punches and lean back, Roger didn’t teach my son all the different things that he’s doing. His Daddy taught him. One thing that I’ll tell you is that the apple don’t fall far from the tree, that’s all I’ve gotta say.
So I think that right there will solve that one

Jenna J: But do you finally think you will get that recognition as the great trainer you are?

Floyd Mayweather Snr: They don’t wanna give it to me, I don’t give a damn if they give it to me or not because I’m a very outspoken person, I speak my mind, I say what’s on my mind and I tell it just like it is. So if they dont wanna give it to me because that’s the way I am, I’m gonna be that way, this is me, this is Floyd, this is the way Floyd is, this is the way Floyd talks this is the way Floyd stands, this is me. I’m not gonna change me, I’m gonna be me.  I’m not gonna change me for a damn trophy, that I wont do !
