The stars that will appear on the bill for the for the first ever professional boxing event at The Olympic Park on Saturday 21st September, turned out yesterday at the fantastic Copper Box Arena for a media workout.
The state of the art venue, that played host to handball at the 2012 games, will play host to the Queensberry Promotions multi-title extraganza which will be shown live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).
Amongst them was unbeaten super-middleweight sensation Frank Buglioni who has his tenth professional outing on the bill. Buglioni reiterated his determination to pick up a title in the near future and spoke of how he’d seen significant improvements in his training camp for his Copper Box date. He said, “Mark Tibbs and I have been working on areas we wanted to improve and I feel we’ve managed to sharpen those areas up. There’s a lot of qualities I have that I haven’t shown yet, and I’m excited to get the chance to show them.”
Finchley heavyweight Dereck Chisora, who in typical Chisora style, arrived wearing the mask also worn by the super villain ‘Bane’ in the Batman movies. Chisora faces Edmund Gerber for the Vacant European Title for his second crack at the European strap. He was greeted with the usual media intrigue as the always jovial former World Title challenger posed for photos with fans and media alike.
Whilst Penge unbeaten welterweight Bradley Skeete ran through his paces in the ring with trainer Alan Smith and afterwards spoke of his British title aspirations. He said, “For this show I was offered a Frankie Gavin fight, which I felt I’m not yet ready for. I’ve got a lot of respect for Frankie he’s a fantastic talent, but at the moment he’s that level above me, so I didn’t accept the fight. When he moves to world level, I’d like to step up and fight for that Lonsdale belt as being British champion is a big ambition for me.”
Former amateur star Georgie Kean, who makes his pro bow at the Copper Box Arena, was next to impress the cameras in the training ring with his slick footwork. Kean who has sold a huge amount of tickets for the show, spoke of his excitement to make the debut on such a historic event. He said, “The arena is fantastic and it’s going to be jumping on fight night, I just can’t wait to get in the ring and get started. I’ve just kept coming back to the Queenberry box office for tickets, as they’ve been flying out. It’s fair to say that there’s going to a lot of very loud Georgie Kean fans here on the 21st!”
The stacked Copper Box Arena show is headlined by Billy Joe Saunders v John Ryder for the British and Commonwealth Middleweight titles; Dereck Chisora v Edmund Gerber for the Vacant European Heavyweight title; Frankie Gavin v David Barnes for the British and Commonwealth Welterweight Championship, Paul Butler v Miguel Gonzalez for the Vacant WBO Intercontinental Super-Flyweight Championship; Liam Walsh v Joe Murray for the Commonwealth and Vacant IBF International Super-Featherweight title; Mitchell Smith v Scott Moises for the Vacant Southern Area Super-Featherweight title.
