Frankie gavin has won the British title outright after a 3rd successful defence against 32 year old David Barnes on Saturday night at the Copperbox Arena.
Gavin age 27 come into this bout full of confidence as he come off a stoppage win of the previously unbeaten Denton Vassell in Jun e.
First two rounds were very cagey, not much coming from either fighter, although towards the second half of the second, Gavin cut Barnes on his right eye after a superb 2 punch combination which forced Barnes to steer clear and move away from Gavin for the remaining part of the round.
Barnes was warned by the referee to stop holding Gavin in the 5th, and you could see him getting frustrated in the ring as Barnes continued to hold on. There was then a soft low blow in the 8th and frankie only need a few seconds to get back into the fight. Again Barnes was warned for holding towards the end of the round.
Barnes then began to get more success with the jab, and then Gavins Right eye began to bruise a little, but Barnes never had him in any trouble with the majority of the solid straight shots coming from Gavin. Neither fighter looked threatening but towards the middle part of the fight frankie was coming on a lot better. He remained content boxing on the backfoot and just doing enough to win the championship rounds.
A good performance from Frankie Gavin, onwards and upwards for this talented young man who in my eyes is nearly ready to mix it at world level in the next 12 months.
Frankie wins by Unanimous decision: 118-111, 118-112, 117- 112
