After a stop-star career, Sunderland heavyweight Danny Hughes is raring to get back into action under new promoter Phil Jeffries.
Hughes, previously guided by Northeast mainstay Tommy Conroy, has only lost to Audley Harrison and Michael Sprott in a 15-fight career, with both those reverses coming within the Prizefighter format.
Now, under the Pro Box North East banner, ‘Bad News’ Hughes is looking to stay busy and get into some kind of title contention within the next year.
“I decided to work with Phil as he is pretty busy putting shows on all year round and has good contacts with lots of other promoters to get me work,” explained Hughes of the switch in promoters. “Phil is also a friend and I know he will work hard to get me to a title.
“My plans are to fight in December in Newcastle just to get back in the swing of things and then after that a good 50-50 fight. Maybe then I can challenge for a title and get into the mix.
“I think someone like Hughie Fury or Ian Lewison might have a title by next year and I’d love to fight one of them for a belt.”
“I’m pleased to have Danny fighting on my future shows,” stated Jeffries. “He’s a top lad and a good talent, with fast hands and knockout power. I’ve said to him though that he needs to stay fit and motivated because I will be keeping him busy. We need a good heavyweight in the Northeast, and I think there are some really exciting fights ahead for him and for the region’s boxing fans.”
Pro Box North East’s next show is at the Rainton Meadows Arena on October 19. The bill is headlined by Sunderland’s Kirk Goodings and Middlesbrough’s Paul Truscott for the English lightweight title, as well as Martin Ward boxing for the Commonwealth bantamweight crown.
The rest of the Rainton Meadows card will feature some of the best unbeaten fighters from the region including Easington’s Paul Archer; South Shields’ Anthony Nelson; Sunderland’s Jonson McClumpha; Hartlepool’s Callum Winton and Mick Hadfield, and Horden’s Anthony Hardy. Also appearing will be Edinburgh’s John McCallum.
