It is time the WBC stripped Vitali Klitschko

The WBC is giving the champion even more time to keep us all waiting.

WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko hasn’t been inside a boxing ring – since the 8th of August, 2012 when he successfully defended against Syrian boxer, Manuel Charr. Injury and political ambitions have kept him from defending against his mandatory challenger.

Vitali is heavily involved in the Ukrainian political system and is hoping to become President of the former Soviet country. This week has seen a lot of protests against the current regime. Ukraine was this week plunged into crisis when President Viktor Yanukovich turned down a free-trade deal with the European Union under pressure from Russia, with pro-European demonstrators blockading the government’s main building in the capitol Kiev.

It is admirable that the 42-year-old has high ambitions away from the world of boxing but his lack of activity is hurting the division. His No.1 mandatory contender, Berman Stiverne (23-1, 20 KOs) has now been waiting for his, well deserved, shot for way too long. Haitian born Stiverne defeated Ray Austin, in 2011, in an Eliminator and gone through another one against Chris Arreola this year. All the while, Vitali has sat it out on the sidelines, without making a clear decision on his future – this is both unfair on the sport, division and Stiverne.

At the WBC convention, last month in Thailand, it was announced that they would give the champion until November 30th, to make a decision, but now it seems Klitschko will be granted another extension until December 15th.

While Vitali keeps the boxing world guessing and this saga dragging on, there is a talented contender being left in the dark. So, we have had no fight negotiations, purse bids or date set for the fight.

The WBC need to stop playing favourites and strip Vitali Klitschko (45-2, 41 KOs) of their title; if he still can’t make a decision on December 15th. The WBC are being made to look weak and need to act for the good of boxing.
