55th Anniversary of Gavilan’s Final Win

55 years ago today on April 4th , the Cuban Welterweight legend known as Kid Gavilan would get his final win as a professional against Ralph Tiger Jones. This would also be the final chapter in their trilogy that saw Gavilan come ahead 2 out of 3.

The two first met on August 28th 1953 In Madison Square Garden and after a hard fought 10 rounds, Gavilan was awarded a unanimous decision by scores of 5-4, 6-4, and 7-3.

It would be 5 years until the 2 would meet again and on Feb 19th 1958 at the Carillon Hotel in Miami Beach Florida, Ralph would even the score and take a split decision victory over Gavilan by scores of 97-95, 97-96 and 94-97. An immediate rematch followed.

The two met again for the 3rd and final time on April 4th 1958 at the Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In this fight the Cuban Hawk would soar once more and show flashes of the in ring brilliance that made him one of the greatest welterweights of all time. When the smoke finally cleared after 10 rounds, Referee Joe Sweeny saw it 46-44 for Jones, while Judge Jim Mina had it 47-44, and Judge Nate Lopinson had it 47-43 for Gavilan by split decision.

In his very next fight Kid Gavilan would drop a unanimous decision to Yama Bahama in Florida. Shortly thereafter Kid Gavilan would call it a career. He retired with a record of 108-30-5 with 28 KOS and was never knocked out as a professional. He is probably best remembered for his fights with Sugar Ray Robinson, Tony Demarco, Bobo Olson, and Carmen Basilio among others. He will forever a symbol to Cuban boxing and is commonly recognized for his Famous and Flashy Bolo Punch.
