Floyd Mayweather drops WBC welterweight title as Pacquiao becomes No.1 contender

I have been informed that current pound for pound linchpin, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather Jr, 45-0 (KO26) has dropped his WBC welterweight world title due to the fact that Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao 55-5 (KO38) has now been installed as the number one contender for the pound for pound number one fighter on the planet.

“He can have the belt. A belt doesn’t make me,” Mayweather stated in a recent interview.

It seems to me that its more down to the whole Top Rank/Bob Arum issue Mayweather has had for a number of years now.

Pacquiao recently outpointed Brandon Rios in a very one sided bout. Mayweather questioned the WBC’s choice of installing Pacquiao above Tim Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez ahead of the Filipino slugger because they have both beaten ‘Pacman’ in the last twelve months.

“Now all of a sudden he is mandatory for my title” A puzzled Mayweather asked.

The Floyd Mayweather we have seen since his father returned to the Mayweather boxing club is a lot different version of the ‘Money’ who faced Puerto Rican pugilist Miguel Cotto.

This has to have a lot to do with Floyd Sr making his long awaited comeback to the gym and corner of his son, making subtle little differences to Floyd Jr’s game plan.

It’s clear to all who have seen Mayweather’s last three bouts.

Do people seriously believe that Floyd Mayweather Jr would refuse a fight with Manny Pacquiao on any other grounds except promoter rivalries, must really give their head a shake for my money.

Pacquiao is not a shot fighter to lower level boxers, but to an intelligent fighter like Mayweather Jr, Pacquiao is shot enough for Mayweather to pretty much get the shut out over Manny Pacquiao.

‘Pacman’ is known as this big puncher, and he has indeed had some cracking knock-out wins down the years, but when was the last time Manny KO’d anyone? It was four years ago Pacquiao TKO’d Miguel Cotto. Pacquiao’s last KO win was the demolition of Ricky Hatton in 2009. Is ‘Pacman’ still a feared puncher? Certainly not.

We all know that Mayweather is a highly skilled athlete and an accomplished boxer in all aspects of his game.

Why would Floyd drop his WBC belt when he would make Pacquiao look slightly foolish in the squared circle?

Top Rank and Bob Arum getting money from his name is the main reason why Mayweather has dropped the strap.

This is clearly not a ‘Duck’ and anyone who honestly believes it truly is seriously needs to take the blinkers off, take a step back and weigh things up before they open their mouths.

This fight has seemingly gone by the way of the dodo unfortunately, once again. I’m certain the rumour mill will continue to make its way around the globe.

Boxing will go on, you can count on that.
