Collazo vs Ortiz preview and prediction

An intriguing clash of styles will mesh on January 30th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn when Victor Ortiz makes his return to the ring to face southpaw Luis Collazo.

Both are former world champions but Ortiz, residing in Oxnard, California, will surely want to get back to winning ways and target a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr after being knocked out in the fourth round of their clash in controversial circumstances when Ortiz butted Mayweather, only to end up on the canvas moments later when the five weight star unleashed hooks upstairs to his unsuspecting opponent.

Nine months later, Victor returned to the ring in June, 2012 to face Josesito Lopez and was forced to retire with a broken jaw at the end of the ninth round after a highly competitive and hard fought contest. Ortiz has been out of action ever since while Luis Collazo has been fighting regularly, his latest win coming against Alan Sanchez in a laboured points win over ten rounds.

The one negative about Victor Ortiz is, although he has tremendous power, if he does not get his man out of the ring quickly he tends to run out of ideas. The plan just to box, and do so smartly, doesn’t seem to enter his mind, as shown in his loss to Lopez and against Lamont Peterson, who he managed to get a draw with. It took Mayweather only twelve minutes to frustrate him, all this indicating that Ortiz has fallen in love with his power just a little too much.
Collazo has a decent enough chin but does struggle with somebody who has some considerable speed, like Hatton, Mosley and Berto did. And Victor Ortiz has plenty in abundance.

The first four rounds are going to test whether Collazo can hang in there, and if he does then I see him pulling out a points win but one would be foolish to write off the power of Ortiz.
