This Saturday night (February 1st) in Monte Carlo, Monaco, WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (28-0-25 KOs) will look to continue his charging crusade across the middleweight division, as he defends his WBA and IBO straps against former World title challenger and Ghana’s first middleweight title holder, Osumanu Adama (22-3-16 KOs), in a bill titled “Monte Carlo night of champions”.
The fight – which will be the second time the champion has fought in the principality, is being promoted by South African promoter Rodney Berman’s Golden Gloves, and will be billed as the main event. There is no doubt as to who the favourite is, going into the main event – Bookmakers William Hill have Golovkin a massive favourite at 1/50 compared to Adamu at 12/1 while a draw is 33/1.
Golovkin – the man with the highest Knock-out ratio in middleweight championship history, will be returning to the same arena that saw him score a brutal third round Knock-out over proud Japanese warrior Nobuhiro Ishida, back in march 2013, and he’ll be looking to impress and continue his domination in his first fight of the year. With recent news that the fight will not be televised in the US, unlike his last couple against Curtis Stevens and Matthew Macklin, “GGG” will need to put on a good performance against the man ranked No.12, by the WBA, to ensure he moves onto bigger things in 2014.
On the undercard and fighting for the WBA international middleweight championship, Ukraine’s Max Bursak (29-1-12 KOs) takes on Australia’s Jarrod Fletcher (17-1-10 KOs). Also fighting will be Ireland’s Dean Byrne (17-2-6 KOs) as he takes on unbeaten Russian star Roman Belaev (12-0-10 KOs), as the pair tussle for the vacant WBA Intercontinental welterweight title.
