Former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (43-1-1 31 KO’s) called out Erislandy Lara (19-1-2 12 KO’s) yesterday through social media to announce his next PPV fight scheduled for July 12th.
Canelo’s social media post translates to, “My next fight would be on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nevada. We have several options as our opponents and our primary being Lara. We offered him the fight and its now up to him to accept and stop talking s***.”
‘The American Dream’ Lara is scheduled to defend his WBA title against former IBF junior middleweight champion Ishe Smith (25-6 11 KO’s) on May 2nd. With the Lara-Smith date so close to Canelo’s July 12th date, Golden Boy Promotions are willing to pull Lara to have him ready for the promotion and eliminate the risk of him getting defeated or cut.
Is Canelo making the right move? For months the boxing fans believe that Alvarez was ducking Lara because of his similar slick style to that of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Last month during Canelo’s post fight conference after the Angulo fight, Lara confronted Canelo stating when he was going to fight him. Canelo seemed somewhat bothered and replied, “you have to wait, that’s not how fights are made”. Lara being perceived as a dangerous fight for Canelo and at the middleweight division, and now Canelo is willing to dance with him up in the squared circle on July 12th on PPV.
